WOW THIS SHOW IS MUCH BETTER THAN VOYAGER
So I've watched up to Sabotage. Definitely an interesting watchable show though it has FLAWS.
As has been mentioned here the intra-character conflict often came across forced. However after BSG and Lost I am beginning to get used to people constantly overreacting to every situation and pointing guns at each other for half the episode. This kinda DRAMA seems to be becoming the norm unfortunately. I now pine for TNG days of everyone getting along in one big happy family. So many have criticized the comradery on TNG saying "PEOPLE DON'T ACT LIKE THAT". Well people don't act like THIS either, and I am much more likely to believe that a group of people simply get along real well than a group that is filled with back-stabbing scumbags each with walk-in closets full of skeletons. Why is it that the producers of shows for the past 6 years seem to base their cast profiles on characters from Jerry Springer episodes?
Anyway, promisingly enough, ever since the mutiny episode people seem to have significantly chilled out. If the people on the ship have actually learned to make a concerted effort to get along after witnessing all the preceding ridiculousness, that's definitely a point for the SGU writers who could have drawn out this BS far longer. Of course I'm sure we'll see this shit flare up again, the real test is seeing whether the civilians on the ship stand behind Young the next time Col Asianface and the IOA stage one of their childish power plays.
Okay lets talk about something that really pisses me off that no one here has seemed to mention. WTF IS IT WITH THE FUCKING MUSIC. Every single episode recently there has been some pointless montage accompanied by music with varying degrees of gayness. So many bitched at Enterprise for the gheyness of their intro music but this is FAR FAR WORSE. Sometimes it even happens twice in one episode. I remember how annoying this was in Lost when Hurley still had battery power in his CD player, but who knows if this shit will ever end in SGU.
One point of redemption on this issue was in the episode "Human" that had the Preludio from Bach's Partita for Violin No. 3 in E major (BWV 1006 DUH) playing in the background of the opining scenes, as well as various parts of Bach Cello Suites during the rest of the episode. But even then they could not resist making Rush into an iPod fag for 30 seconds sometime in the middle.
Otherwise, I find the show very refreshing compared to previous Stargate series. I appreciate the focus on the characters lives on Destiny and the fact that most character moments we get arise from relatively realistic human failings and relationships, not scifi plot hijinks. I actually enjoy the soap opera elements of my scifi shows. One of my favorite aspects of DS9 was that often while some characters were off dealing with some scifi plot dilemma in Story A, others were back on the station dealing with sitcom, sometimes Seinfeld-esque situations in Story B. SGU of course is far more dramarific with half the cast having illicit relationships with the other half. Still entertaining overall. Also, as usual for Stargate, there is a good amount of comfortable humor, something that was sorely lacking from BSG and Lost.
I do wonder if the people on Destiny have any concept of ethics at all. Do the poor saps that volunteer their bodies for stone transfer have any idea the abuse their guests put them through. Getting piss drunk, into fights, and having sex with random people (hope the USAF is providing condoms) as a matter of course. I wonder how whoever's body was taken by Gook #1 feels about having hawt lesbian sex with Michelle from 24. She probably feels fine since all girls secretly want to be lesbians and appear on Girls Gone Wild but I imagine most guys (not ones that post here) would probably be pretty pissed if someone took over their body then had buttsex while visiting their boyfriend.
I also like that many times the writers setup seemingly cliche situations but then resolve them in realistic ways. My favorite was when TJ was first about to inform Young of her pregnancy only to get Interrupted by the Comm. I was halfway through a facepalm before Young said "So you were saying??" TJ still held out but it wasn't because of some ridicules plot contrivance. Simple but nice.
So far so good. The show has a decent amount of TITS though I tire of constant sez scenes. I prefer the Show don't Tell TnA of 90s TV shows. Though I wouldn't mind Angry Gook's girlfriend taking over Lt. James humongous tits and then having a threesome with her and Chloe. Maybe that should be a webisode.
