On the bright side, I somehow have none of the ingredients for my traditional Sunday brunch, but the other day on "Jeopardy!" I heard about something called a "Dutch Baby" that looked tasty and, upon cursory research, looked fairly simple to make: https://altonbrown.com/recipes/dutch-baby-pancake/

In the process of the research, my brain was jogged about a childhood local restaurant chain in the Twin Cities called Pannekoeken Huis that served what is clearly a variant of a Dutch Baby. Sadly, the last one apparently closed February 2024.

Hobby Lobby is weird. Somehow I found out they're like, the last place on the planet that still sells those little glass cups for votive candles. And like, $4 for 6, so crazy cheap to boot. For various reasons I have a plastic grocery bag full of scented votive candles and once I confirmed that their candle holders would work (big shot glasses from World Market cost $10 for 6 and did NOT work), I came back for another pack. But it was Sunday and apparently they, like Chik-Fil-A, are not open on Sunday. So I came back this week. I was waiting in the checkout line so to kill time I'm looking for the barcode so I can hand it to the checker oriented so she can quickly scan it and I can be on my way. I cannot find the barcode ANYWHERE. There's an old-school yellow price sticker, but no barcode. After looking about 3 times while I'm waiting for the person in front of me, I finally look at the checkout area. There is no barcode reader. The checker looks at the price sticker and 10 keys the amount into the register. WTF. I bitch a lot about the present, but going to a store where the checkers actually key in the items was bizarre. I mean, where do you even find registers that aren't set up for barcodes? Shit, I should've paid for it with a personal check.

I think I mentioned this earlier but this summer my cat has discovered the joy of the post-lunch siesta and biscuit-making.

It was in the old cat's contract that he got to snuggle during an after-lunch nap and the new cat hasn't really been into it--but the new dog is. So I've started napping on my bed because that makes it easier with a 71# dog. Well it isn't every day but...basically here's the routine: After lunch I mute my phone, loosen my belt, grab a blanket and some dark sunglasses. While I'm kicking off my shoes, The Dog hops up on the bed and once I lay down, she plops her head and shoulders on my lap for pets. Eventually she gets up and lays next to my legs so I can put my hand on her butt. Then The Cat hops up on the bed, usually gets growled at by The Dog, and hunkers down in the triangle made by me, The Dog, and my arm and makes biscuits up against my arm before settling in for the nap.

If I can afford to keep doing that every afternoon I shall be content. Mostly.

I came up with a horrible dessert idea I may inflict on the next potluck I'm invited to: A plate of Ritz crackers with a bowl of butterscotch pudding in the center for dipping. Pudding on the Ritz.
