Vanessa Bryant Wins $16 Million in Helicopter Crash Photo Lawsuit​


Vanessa Bryant and co-plaintiff Chris Chestier won a combined $31 million in damages in their invasion-of-privacy lawsuit against Los Angeles County. Both Bryant and Chester lost a spouse and a daughter in a January 2020 helicopter crash. Shortly thereafter, graphic photographs of the crash were spreading. During the trial, several deputies and fire officials testified to sharing the images, including “a deputy who said he showed graphic images from the scene while at a bar, another deputy who said he shared photos while playing a video game, a deputy who sent dozens of photos to someone he didn’t know, and a fire official who showed the images to other personnel during an awards ceremony cocktail hour,” per CNN. According to the Los Angeles Times reporter Alene Tchekmedyian, Bryant was awarded $16 million and Chester $15 million. After 11 days of testimony, including some during which Bryant “wept so hard her body shook and she appeared to be gasping for breath,” a federal jury has found that LA County Sheriff and Fire Departments were at fault. Bryant had been seeking up to $42.5 million, and Chester up to $32.5 million.

What does the verdict mean?​


The award has nothing to do with the crash itself. It instead is to compensate her for her past and future emotional distress after she accused county sheriff’s and fire department employees of taking, sharing and displaying photos of her family members’ remains from the crash site without having a legitimate business reason for it. The nine-member jury unanimously found this conduct violated the constitutional rights of Bryant and fellow plaintiff Chris Chester, who lost his wife and daughter in the same crash.

Jurors who settled the fate of Vanessa Bryant's two-week long trail against Los Angeles County doled out too much money to Bryant, according to USA Today. Bryant's $16 million verdict is set to be notched down to $15 million after a clerical error, Judge John Walter said on Friday, according to the report. Chris Chester, whose wife Sarah and daughter Payton were also aboard the helicopter, was awarded $15 million after he and Bryant took on the county in a joint trial – and jurors intended to evenly distribute the damages.

Kobe Bryant jersey from MVP season sells for over $5.8 million​


A signed Kobe Bryant jersey, worn during his lone MVP season in 2007-08, has sold for $5,849,700 with Sotheby's, a record for any Bryant item. It's the second most expensive basketball jersey ever sold. Following Bryant's death three years ago, murals arose around the world depicting Bryant in this uniform. Per Sotheby's, the jersey's lot includes a collection of photographs by Greg Cohen of those murals. Also, there are a variety of materials that depict this jersey including artwork, magazines, newspapers, T-shirts, photographs, pins, books and others in the lot -- as well as photo matching and a letter of authenticity.

When Bryant was awarded what would be his only MVP trophy, at the Staples Center on May 7, 2008, he was wearing this uniform. He also wore it for 25 of his 82 games that season, including six playoff games, most notably, during that year's Western Conference finals. When a jersey worn in Bryant's rookie season -- signed as well -- sold for $3.69 million in May 2021, it was the highest-selling basketball jersey of all time. That record has since been broken, now belonging to a jersey Michael Jordan wore in Game 1 of the 1998 "Last Dance" NBA Finals, which also sold via Sotheby's for $10.091 million last September.

Vanessa Bryant settles crash photos suit for $28.85 million​


Vanessa Bryant settled her remaining claims with Los Angeles County for $28.85 million over photos that deputies shared after a 2020 helicopter crash that killed her husband, former Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant; their 13-year-old daughter, Gianna; and seven others.The settlement included the $15 million a jury already awarded Vanessa Bryant in August after a trial in federal court. Co-plaintiff Chris Chester, whose wife and daughter were also killed in the crash, received a $19.95 million settlement. The photos from the crash were shared mostly among employees of the Los Angeles County sheriff's and fire departments, including by some who were playing video games and attending an awards banquet. They also were seen by some of their spouses and in one case by a bartender at a bar where a deputy was drinking.

Calipari thanks Kobe Bryant's family for package to honor Gigi​


John Calipari thanked Vanessa Bryant and her daughter, Natalia, after the family sent the Kentucky coach a package to honor Gigi Bryant on what would have been her 17th birthday on Monday. Kobe and Calipari are forever linked because of the 1996 NBA draft. At the time, Calipari was a first-year head coach with the New Jersey Nets and Kobe was a promising high school star. The Nets had the 8th pick in the NBA draft. They selected former Villanova star Kerry Kittles and Bryant went to the Los Angeles Lakers with the 13th pick. Calipari said he'd pushed for the team to pick Kobe, but he couldn't get the other powerbrokers within the franchise to back him. Calipari said Kobe would later joke with him that he'd "still be in the NBA" if the Nets had selected him.

Kobe's daughter Natalia tosses first pitch on Lakers Night at Dodger Stadium​


Natalia Bryant threw out the ceremonial first pitch Friday night before the Dodgers hosted the Braves as the Lakers NBA franchise for which her father Kobe starred was honored. The 20-year-old USC student tossed the ball from in front of the mound. It took one bounce and into the glove of All-Star Mookie Betts, who was handling catching duties. Bryant was joined by her mother, Vanessa, and sisters, 6-year-old Bianka and 4-year-old Capri. They all wore Dodgers jerseys. The back of Vanessa's read Queen Mamba, a nod to Kobe's nickname. Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka also attended. Kobe Bryant, daughter Gianna and seven others were killed in a helicopter crash in 2020.

US Open 2023: Novak Djokovic pays tribute to NBA legend Kobe Bryant after winning his 24th Grand Slam title​


Novak Djokovic made tennis history by defeating Danili medvedev the U.S Open final, as he earned his 24th Grand Slam title. Bryant's "Mamba Mentality" of trying to get better everyday continues to inspire millions of people around the world.

Kobe Bryant immortalized with 19-foot bronze statue at Lakers' arena​


The Los Angeles Lakers unveiled a statue of Kobe Bryant on Thursday, honoring their late superstar with a 19-foot bronze likeness outside their downtown arena. The 4,000-pound statue depicts Bryant in his white No. 8 jersey with his right index finger raised as he walked off the court following his 81-point performance against the Toronto Raptors in January 2006. The first statue was unveiled at a ceremony attended by dozens of Lakers greats and hundreds of season ticket holders. Vanessa Bryant spoke at the ceremony after remarks from owner Jeanie Buss, former teammate Derek Fisher, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and longtime Lakers coach Phil Jackson.

The statue's base reads: "Kobe Bean Bryant," with his nickname, "Black Mamba," carved below. The platform is surrounded by five replicas of the Larry O'Brien Trophy. The base also features the box score from his 81-point game, along with a Bryant quote: "Leave the game better than you found it. And when it comes time for you to leave, leave a legend."

Bryant is the sixth Lakers player and seventh team employee to be honored with a statue in Star Plaza outside of the arena known as the Staples Center throughout Bryant's career. He joins Shaquille O'Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor and Lakers announcer Chick Hearn.

Errors on Kobe Bryant statue outside of Crypto.com Arena to be fixed​


The Kobe Bryant statue unveiled last month outside of Crypto.com Arena has already become a staple for fans to flock to before and after Lakers games. And it's already in need of a few adjustments. There are several errors in the etched marble base of the statue, including Jose Calderon's and Von Wafer's names misspelled in the replica box score from Bryant's 81-point game between the Lakers and Toronto Raptors and a formatting mistake on another side of the base where Bryant's career accomplishments are listed.

Bryant's 19-foot bronze statue depicting him in his No. 8 jersey is the first of three statues that have been commissioned to honor the Lakers great, according to his widow, Vanessa Bryant. The planned location and the unveiling date for the other two statues -- one of Bryant in his No. 24 uniform and the other with his daughter, Gianna, who also died in the 2020 helicopter crash -- are still to be determined, according to a Lakers spokesperson.

Joe 'Jellybean' Bryant, father of Kobe Bryant, dies at age 69​

Former NBA player Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, the father of Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant, has died. He was 69. Joe Bryant played and coached professionally both in the United States and internationally after starring at La Salle, where he averaged 20.8 points per game in two seasons with the Explorers. He was a first-round draft selection of the Golden State Warriors in 1975 before being acquired later that year by the Philadelphia 76ers. "Joe 'Jellybean' Bryant was a local basketball icon, whose legacy on the court transcended his journey across Bartram High School, La Salle University, and his first four NBA seasons with the 76ers from 1975-79," the Sixers said in a statement. "Our condolences go out to the Bryant family." The 6-foot-9 Bryant played parts of eight seasons in the NBA with the Sixers, Clippers and Rockets, averaging 8.7 points and 4.0 rebounds in 606 career games. He was a member of the 1976-77 Sixers team that lost to the Trail Blazers in the NBA Finals.

Friday's date (8/2/24) holds similar numerology meaning to the February ceremony (2/8/24), representing both of Bryant's uniform numbers (8 and 24) and the No. 2 that 13-year-old Gigi wore on the basketball court.
 
Kobe Bryant's Staple Center locker fetches record $29M at auction
According to Sotheby's, it's the most valuable sports locker to ever sell at auction. It's also the third-most expensive piece of Bryant memorabilia of all time. The locker was bidding at $750,000, but over the final twenty minutes of the auction, four bidders pushed the sale to just under $3 million.

During the Staples Center's 2018 renovations, an unnamed maintenance worker saved Bryant's locker from demolition, sold it to a private collector, who reunited the locker with Bryant's nameplate.
