2024 NBA finals:big questions ahead ofmaverick-celtics

The 64-win Boston Celtics, behind the most efficient offense in NBA history, have lost only twice during the playoffs and are led by the play of Jayson Tatum and Eastern Conference finals MVP Jaylen Brown. - The fifth-seeded Dallas Mavericks, meanwhile, solidified their claim as the biggest winner of the trade deadline. In February, the franchise added center Daniel Gafford and forward P.J. Washington, who have meshed perfectly with Dallas' star duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving to create a giant killer in the Western Conference.

Kyrie Irving aims to silence Celtics crowd, 'self-doubt' in Game 5

With his Dallas Mavericks attempting to avoid elimination in the NBA Finals, Kyrie Irving feels the pressure to perform in a road arena that presents uniquely challenging circumstances for him. After Sunday's practice in preparation for Game 5 on Monday, Irving discussed the villain treatment he has received at TD Garden since his decision to leave the Boston Celtics in free agency five years ago. Irving struggled in the Mavs' two road losses to open these Finals, averaging 14.0 points on 35.1% shooting, providing plenty of ammunition for a fan base that considers him to be a public enemy. Before these Finals started, Irving expressed regret for how he reacted to Celtics fans during that 2022 series, specifically flashing his middle finger toward them on a couple of occasions. He had stepped on the eye of the leprechaun in the half-court logo after Brooklyn's Game 4 win in the 2021 East first, a series the Nets won in five games, further enraging a Boston fanbase that felt spurned by his free agency departure. The Mavs face a monumental challenge regardless of venue as they attempt to make NBA history by becoming the first of 157 teams to overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a series.

GAME 1 | Celtics 107, Mavericks 89

Celtics rout Mavericks 107-89 in Game 1 of NBA Finals behind Brown, returning Porzingis

Jaylen brown scored 22 points, Porzingis made an immediate impact off the bench and added 20 and the Boston Celtics powered past the Dallas Mavericks 107-89 on Thursday night in Game 1. Derrick White finished with 15 points for Boston, which led by 29 points in the first half and connected on 16 3-pointers in a powerful start to its quest for an 18th NBA title. All-Star Jayson Tatum finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Six players scored in double figures for the Celtics, who host Game 2 on Sunday. Porzingis ended his 10-game hiatus when he came off the bench with 7:17 left in the first quarter in place of starter Al Horford. With the exception of a white compression sleeve on his right leg, it was hard to tell Porzingis was coming off an injury. Porzingis finished the half with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting.

Luka Doncic led Dallas with 30 points. P.J. Washington added 14 points and eight rebounds. But Dallas couldn’t find offensive consistency beyond that, totaling just nine assists on its 35 field goals for the game. The Mavericks didn't score 25 points in any quarter. Doncic said the lopsided loss wouldn't diminish the spirit of a team that lost the opening game in three of four series this postseason. Former Celtic Kyrie Irving struggled throughout, finishing with 12 points. He received a loud and extended chorus of boos Thursday when he was introduced before the game. It continued throughout the game whenever he touched the ball. The treatment came after Irving sparred with Boston fans and was fined for using an obscene gesture during a 2022 playoff visit to TD Garden.

GAME 2 | Dallas (98) @ Boston (105)

Celtics beat Mavericks 105-98, take 2-0 lead in NBA Finals as series heads to Dallas

Boston

Jrue Holiday led the scoring. Derrick White added a chase-down block. Jayson Tatum and Jayloen Brown pitched in, too — with their passing and defense. Holiday had 26 points and 11 rebounds, and White sprinted down the court to swat away the Mavericks' last chance on Sunday night as Boston beat Dallas 105-98 to take a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals. Tatum made up for a rough shooting night with 12 assists and nine rebounds to go with his 18 points. Brown scored 21 with three steals, White had 18 points and three steals, and Payton Pritchard’s only basket of the game was a banked half-courter to beat the third quarter buzzer and give Boston an 83-74 lead. Kristaps Porzingis limped his way to 12 points for top-seeded Boston.

Dallas

Doncic, who was listed as questionable to play less than two hours before the opening tipoff, had his 10th career playoff triple-double. But he scored only three points in the fourth, converting a three-point play with 1:15 left as Dallas scored nine in a row to cut a 14-point deficit to 103-98. Irving, who scored 16 points, has lost 12 games in a row against the Celtics. A day after Kidd attempted to sow dissension in the Celtics locker room by calling Brown — not Tatum, an All-NBA first-teamer — the team's best player, Boston showed why it doesn't matter.

GAME 3 | Boston (106) @ Dallas (99)

Boston

Boston is one win away from a record-setting 18th NBA championship -- one the Celtics can capture Friday in Game 4 at American Airlines Center. Tatum scored 31 points, Brown had 30 and the Celtics held off a furious Dallas rally to move to the verge of a record 18th championship with a 106-99 victory over the Mavericks on Wednesday night for a 3-0 lead. The Celtics are within one victory of moving ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers for all-time league titles.

Dallas

The Mavs almost pulled off a crazy comeback to avoid the big hole — 13 years after Dallas had the biggest fourth-quarter rally in the play-by-play era of the NBA Finals (since 1997) when a 15-point comeback in Game 2 started its run to the franchise’s only title against Miami. Problem was, Luka Doncic picked up his sixth foul with 4:12 remaining

GAME 4 | Boston (84) @ Dallas (122)

Boston

Entering Game 4 of the NBA Finals, and sitting one win away from a record-setting 18th NBA championship, the Boston Celtics told the world they would play with the same motivation they did through the first three games of the series. Things didn't exactly play out that way. That will now have to wait until at least Monday back in Boston, where the Celtics will try to regroup and finish the series off.

Dallas

Doncic responded in the best possible way, putting together a dominant, poised performance to lead the Mavericks to a season-extending win.Doncic finished with 29 points and 5 assists in 33 minutes, resting the entire fourth quarter along with the rest of the starters on both sides. Doncic became the fourth player in NBA history with at least 600 points, 150 rebounds and 150 assists in a single postseason, joining Nikola Jokic, LeBron James and Larry Bird, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Kyrie Irving finished with just 15 points on 5-of-16 shooting and has lost 13 of the last 14 meetings against the Celtics team he left in the summer of 2019 to join the Brooklyn Nets. NBA teams are now 0-157 in postseason series after falling into a 3-0 deficit.

Boston salutes Celtics' record 18th NBA championship with parade

The Celtics entered the season vowing to turn recent playoff heartbreaks into happiness. Eight months later, they toasted the franchise's 18th championship in what has become the signature Boston celebration, joined Friday by a huge crowd for a duck boat parade to mark the 13th championship won this century by one of the city's franchises in the four biggest U.S. sports leagues. The Celtics, Patriots, Red Sox and Bruins have all commemorated championships by jumping aboard the duck boats -- amphibious vehicles usually ridden by sightseeing tourists. Starting at TD Garden, the procession lasted about 90 minutes, turning first onto Causeway Street in front of the arena, past City Hall, through Boston Common, down Boylston Street and ending at Hynes Convention Center. Along the way, there were plenty of moments for the city to salute a franchise that just broke a tie with the rival Los Angeles Lakers for the most titles in league history. Fans marked the moment by hanging on light posts, flashing homemade signs or standing on subway entrances.
