Alcoholism evaluation

If your personality changes when you've drunk a lot, that's a sign. The rest of it is pretty much hopeful client trolling.

I grin a lot when drunk and am more sarcastic.

I can't let her drink more than 3. She'll get all weepy and shit.

Yup, or pissed off at things that won't matter in a hundred years, like places I've wasted my time, time that will never be recovered....

Bleh, have fun and don't sweat the stupidity. There's enough of it in life without targeting a single instance.

Not a gag --it's actually one of my favorites.

Wish we could get that here...

The only part of my personality which changes is my inhibitions. You know, standard alcohol stuff. I certainly don't become violent.

Messenger, I want to go back on my original statement about denial. No one can determine for you if you drink too much. They can give guidelines, but that is it. If it seems to be a problem in your life, and you want it to change, well there are obviuosly avenues to do that. Treatment centers do "troll" for clients as Jack said. Anyone could be labeled an alcoholic.
I can only speak from my experience, because it runs in my family and I showed signs of not being able to control it I decided not to drink. But it was my decision and mine alone. I can't judge anothers drinking, nor do I want to.
The other point I was trying to make-that it seems more acceptable to drink on a Friday night, act like an idiot, then to say "I don't drink"
But for me I can't, so I don't.

Alcoholism is subjective.

Most might agree that when it interferes with responsibility, it's a problem.

I don't think I read it, or remember it.

Alcoholism has nothing to do with the amount you drink -it's psychological. It's about the desire to drink.

Those tests are misleading because they class about 95% of the poplation as alcoholics

Quite right. A very simple test as to whether or not you are an alcoholic goes as follows:

Imagine waking up with the worst hangover in your life. Your mouth is dry, your hands are SHAKING, your head pounding, etc.

Now do you want MORE alcohol? If you answered 'no,' you're probably not an alcholic.

More physical and the need to drink...but point taken.

well there's physical dependency - where you have to drink all the time and if you stop you have physical withdrawl symptons,

and psychological dependency which is more complex and harder to break. You can be an alcoholic even if you haven't had a drink for months or even years.

the standard tests do ask some pertinent questions but they're designed more around the physical side, and aren't really very useful

That's where I draw the line at true alcoholism, though. For those who aren't physically addicted it can certainly be a serious problem, but not an addiction. The tests often single out people with a potential for a serious problem as well, which has nothing to do with either.

The same goes for gamblers, ex-smokers, potheads, internet "addicts", and those who like to peruse porn, along with a plethora of other undesirable habits.

I think we're on the same page here, though, it's just a matter of terminology and level of severity.

Hmmmm, perusing porn is bad?
