Tyson Fury survives knockdown, edges Francis Ngannou on points

In a shocking turn of events, Tyson Fury was forced to survive a third-round knockdown to eke past Francis Ngannou via split decision Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. One judge scored it 95-94 for Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion, but was overruled by tallies of 96-93 and 95-94 for Fury. Fury's WBC heavyweight title wasn't on the line in the 10-round boxing match. Ngannou was making his pro boxing debut in his first fight since January 2022. England's Fury was installed as a -1400 favorite to win the match. He moves on to an undisputed heavyweight championship fight against Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs) despite arguably his worst performance against Ngannou. Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs) was expected to dominate Ngannou but instead settled for a decision. Ngannou (17-3 MMA record) was regarded for his immense punching power in MMA but had never even boxed in the amateurs.

Some players recently outlined various concerns in a letter to WTA CEO Steve Simon and during two meetings with tour leadership. Among the topics were a guaranteed income and coverage for maternity leave and injury absences, along with an objection to a planned change in rules governing mandatory tournament appearances.

Kansas' Bill Self now highest-paid coach after amended deal

Kansas coach Bill Self has signed an amended five-year contract -- set up to be effectively a lifetime deal -- that makes him the highest-paid coach in college basketball. Self, 60, will make more than $13 million in compensation for the 2023-24 season and $53 million over the next five years, a number that includes $7.2 million in salary previously deferred due to COVID-related economic challenges. Kentucy's John Calipari was previously the highest-paid coach in the country; he will earn $44 million over the next five years, sources told ESPN. The Jayhawks enter the 2023-24 season as the preseason No. 1 team in the country after earning back-to-back 1-seeds and winning the 2022 NCAA tournament. Self should reach 800 career wins this season and already has two national championships and 20 league titles -- including 13 straight Big 12 championships.
