NCAA D1 proposes cutting transfer portal window in half
The NCAA Division I Council proposed changes to the transfer period windows that would reduce the total number of days that student athletes can enter the transfer portal from 60 down to 30.

As it stands now, there is a transfer window in college football that starts the day after the College Football Playoff teams are announced, which was Dec. 4 in 2022, and is open for 45 days. Another transfer window is open in the spring from April 15 to April 30.
 
.Men's. women's ACC/SEC matchups announced
The matchups for the first ACC/SEC Challenge were announced Wednesday morning, headlined by Duke's trip to Arkansas on the men's side and Virginia Tech's game against LSU on the women's side. The ACC/SEC Men's Challenge will take place Nov. 28 and Nov. 28, while the Women's Challenge is scheduled for Nov. 29 and 30.
 

San Diego State to inform Mountain West it wants to stay in league, source says​


San Diego State is expected to deliver notice to the Mountain West on Friday that it will not withdraw from the league, a source told ESPN. The update from the school will be the latest in a back-and-forth between the school and the conference that began on June 13, when SDSU informed the Mountain West it "intends" to leave the conference. San Diego State now plans to move forward as part of the Mountain West, per sources, as it does not have an invitation from a power conference. The Mountain West had yet to receive any notice as of early Friday afternoon and has yet to comment. The news emerged on Friday because it marked a significant deadline. If SDSU were to leave the Mountain West for the start of the 2024-25 season after June 30, it would need to pay nearly $34 million, up from about $16.5 million. That means that SDSU is expected be in the Mountain West for the next two seasons, as it's unlikely it would pay $34 million to leave prior. San Diego State's impending decision on Friday comes the day that the Pac-12's board of directors again met for an update on the league's television negotiations. Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff gave a more detailed presentation to the Pac-12 board, but sources told ESPN's Heather Dinich on Friday that no deal is expected to be announced imminently.

ACC, CW strikes broadcast deal to air 50 games football, basketball games
The CW has secured the rights to 50 ACC games, beginning Sept. 9 with Pitt's football game against Cincinnati. Thirteen ACC football games will air Saturdays on the CW, which will broadcast 28 ACC men's and women's basketball games throughout December, January and February. The ACC will have men's basketball doubleheaders on the CW every Saturday, and women's basketball doubleheaders on Sunday afternoons.
 
Golden Gate Fields racetrack in Northern California to close in fall
After the Golden Gate Fields meet ends, the Stronach Group said it will focus on moving horses from the Bay Area to Arcadia, with a goal of increasing field sizes and adding a fourth day of racing to the weekly schedule at Santa Anita beginning in January.

Funny Cide won 11 of 38 starts and earned $3,529,412 in his career. The gelding was undefeated in three starts as a 2-year-old. While he lost his first three starts the following year, the last one was a half-length loss to eventual Kentucky Derby favorite Empire Maker in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct in New York.
 
ACC continuing to look at possible expansion, commissioner says
Since the first major realignment dominoes fell with Texas and Oklahoma's decision to leave the Big 12 for the SEC happened in summer 2021, the ACC has explored possible expansion options, according to multiple league administrators.

Defending ACC champion Clemson sets national title goals
Clemson went to the College Football Playoff every season from 2015 through 2020, including national titles in 2016 and 2018, but the Tigers have lost three games in each of the past two years. Clemson opens the 2023 season against Duke on Sept. 4.
 

Venus Williams to play Western & Southern Open as wild card​

Venus Williams will play in the upcoming Western & Southern Open after receiving a wild card, the tournament announced Monday. It is the second hardcourt event Williams will be playing this summer ahead of the US Open, where she also is expected to receive a wild card. The seven-time major champion and former world No. 1 also will first play at next week's Canadian Open in Montreal as a wild card. Williams, 43, returned to competition last month after being sidelined since January with a hamstring injury sustained in Auckland. She played in three grass-court tournaments, culminating at Wimbledon, and had a 1-3 record. Williams, currently ranked No. 524 in the world, won her opening-round match at Auckland to open the 2023 season before losing in the second round and missing the next several months with her injury. During the summer hardcourt series in 2022 she failed to win a match in four tournaments played. The Western & Southern Open main draw gets underway in Mason, Ohio, on Aug. 13. Williams is one of five women who have held the No. 1 ranking competing in the tournament.
