Carolina Panthers not pursuing Deshaun Watson deal ahead of trade deadline, source confirm

The league source would not go into detail on why the Panthers won't go after Watson, a decision first reported by NFL Network. The Panthers pursued Watson earlier this year before the lawsuits and before they traded with the New York Jets for Darnold. But a great deal of social media response to a potential pursuit of the quarterback has been negative. It was only four years ago that former team owner Jerry Richardson was fined $2.75 million by the NFL after its investigation into alleged workplace misconduct, including sexual harassment and the use of a racial slur with a team scout. The Dolphins have been considered the strongest contender for Watson. The Texans' price for the quarterback has been at least three first-round draft picks and possibly other players.

Carolina Panthers activate Stephon Gilmore off PUP list
Gilmore, 31, was a welcome addition because of his ability to play man-to-man coverage in addition to zone. The Panthers wanted Gilmore, who grew up 25 miles from Charlotte in Rock Hill, South Carolina, to help fill the loss of Jaycee Horn. The first-round pick suffered a broken foot in a Week 3 win at Houston and underwent surgery.

Carolina Panthers activate RB Christian McCaffrey; QB Sam Darnold cleared from concussion protocol

The Carolina Panthers on Saturday activated running back Christian McCaffrey from injured reserve, making him eligible for Sunday's home game against the New England Patriots. Also, quarterback Sam Darnold was cleared from the concussion protocol, but he continues to deal with a shoulder injury that keeps him questionable for the 1 p.m. ET game. Being activated doesn't mean McCaffrey, who has missed five games with a hamstring injury, will play. The staff will evaluate him again on Sunday morning to make sure there have been no setbacks. McCaffrey has missed 18 of 24 games because of injury since Rhule was hired last year. Darnold suffered both of his injuries with just under seven minutes left in the 19-13 win at Atlanta on a first-down run around the left side.

Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers agree to deal

Quarterback Cam Newton has agreed to a deal with the Carolina Panthers that will bring him back to the team that he helped reach the Super Bowl in 2015, it was announced Thursday. The deal, which is pending a physical, is worth up to $10 million for the remainder of the season, including $4.5 million guaranteed and a $1.5 million roster bonus, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Panthers, who selected Newton with the first overall pick in the 2011 draft, released him following the 2019 season after he had struggled for several years with shoulder and foot injuries. They began a new regime with coach Matt Rhule at that time. The Panthers (4-5) began searching for options at quarterback after starter Sam Darnold suffered a shoulder injury Sunday that will sideline him four to six weeks. Newton last played for Carolina in the second game of the 2019 season before being sidelined after aggravating a Lisfranc injury suffered in the third preseason game. In nine seasons with Carolina, Newton is the franchise's career leader in passing yards (29,041), passing touchdowns (182) and rushing touchdowns (58). He ranks third with 4,806 rushing yards. According to Elias Sports Bureau data, Newton is 959 passing yards and 194 rushing yards from becoming the first player in NFL history to reach the 30K-5K club for a single team.

CAM NEWTON

Cam Newton gives Carolina Panthers hope, even if he's no longer 'Superman'
Newton was, and still is, the most iconic player in the history of a franchise born in 1995. The top pick of the 2011 draft electrified the Carolinas with his physical skills and eccentric style for seven years before injuries reduced him to a mere human his final two seasons.

Cam Newton latest athlete to return to franchise that made them a household name
While Newton is the latest, the quarterback is far from the first star to return to their roots. The list includes LeBron James, Cleveland (NBA), Randy Moss, Minnesota (NFL), Allen Iverson, Philadelphia (NBA), Ichiro Suzuki, Seattle (MLB) Thierry Henry, Arsanal (Soccer), Jason Kidd, Dallas (NBA), and Tom Glavine, Atlanta (MLB) to name a few.

QB Cam Newton 'still floating' over return to Carolina Panthers

Cam Newton had a question for reporters Friday as he drove past them in a golf cart to his first practice in his second stint with the Carolina Panthers. "Did ya miss me?" the 32-year-old quarterback asked. The huge smile on Newton's face and his interview later made it obvious he had missed the Panthers after spending the past year and a half with the New England Patriots following his first nine NFL seasons at Carolina. "This ain't for no ploy. This ain't for no ticket sales. This ain't for no Cinderella story," Newton said. "It's to win football games. That's pretty much what's on my heart, and that's how I'm going about it." Newton made it clear the past was the past and has been since he began talking to coach Matt Rhule on Tuesday about a return to the team he led to the Super Bowl in 2015 under then-coach Ron Rivera.

Carolina Panthers operating as if Sam Darnold out for NFL season, will give Cam Newton chance to win 2022 starting job, sources say

The Carolina Panthers announced that Sam Darnold is out four to six weeks with a shoulder injury, but the team is operating as if the quarterback will not play again this season, league sources told ESPN. One source told ESPN this past week that the Panthers "know Sam is out for the season," which contributed to Carolina signing quarterback Cam Newton to a one-year contract that essentially guarantees him $6 million. Once the Panthers knew Darnold was out indefinitely, they identified Newton as the best quarterback to help them reach the postseason out of the NFC South. Carolina (4-5) has lost four of its past five games but enters Sunday just 2½ games behind the division-leading Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-2).
