Justine Lindsay, who is believed to be the NFL's first openly transgender cheerleader, said she is happy to "break down that door" and share her "great accomplishment" as a member of the Carolina Panthers' TopCats squad. In an Instagram post three months ago, Lindsay shared that she is a transgender woman and also announced she was joining the TopCats. She said during a recent interview with BuzzFeed News that her trans identity previously had been a secret to everyone except her family. Lindsay, 29, is listed by the Panthers as an official member of the TopCats' 2022 roster, which was posted to the teams website in April. She told BuzzFeed News that she was "so scared" at first about her Instagram announcement in March but that she is now comfortable in her historic role with the TopCats.

South Carolina county suing Panthers owner David Tepper's companies for $21 million
Companies linked to Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper are being sued for more than $21 million by York County over “improperly utilized” funds the South Carolina county spent toward building infrastructure around the site of what was supposed to be the team’s new headquarters -- a project that recently was terminated. The city of Rock Hill, where the facility was being built, also was included in the suit along with Tepper’s Appaloosa Management LP, DT Sports Holding LLC and Tepper Sports Inc.The suit, filed late Thursday, comes less than a month after the project was canceled and Tepper’s real estate company, GT Real Estate Holdings, filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy on the project, estimated to cost $800 million. Tepper, the NFL’s richest owner, with a net worth of $16.7 billion, according to Forbes magazine, already had spent more than $175 million on the project on 240 acres in Rock Hill that was announced in 2019.

Cleveland Browns trade Baker Mayfield to Carolina Panthers for 2024 conditional NFL draft pick
The Cleveland Browns agreed to trade quarterback Baker Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday for a 2024 conditional draft pick. The Panthers will pay $4.85 million of Mayfield's salary, while the Browns will pay $10.5 million, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Mayfield agreed to convert the remainder of his $18.8 million salary into incentives to facilitate the deal, which is pending a physical. Mayfield can earn back that money based on team performance, a source said. The Browns will receive a fourth- or fifth-round pick in 2024, depending on Mayfield's playing time in Carolina, a source told ESPN. Mayfield, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 draft, joins a Panthers team that already has Sam Darnold, the No. 3 overall selection in 2018, on its quarterback depth chart. The Panthers also selected Matt Corral in the third round of this year's draft. With the trade, Carolina's Super Bowl odds went from 125-1 to 100-1 at Caesars Sportsbook, while its odds to win the NFC jumped from 60-1 to 50-1 and to win the NFC South from 12-1 to 11-1.
Baker Mayfield has to prove he's better than Sam Darnold to start for Carolina Panthers
After months of on-again, off-again negotiations, quarterback Baker Mayfield is now a member of the Carolina Panthers after they sent the Cleveland Browns a 2024 conditional draft pick for him in Wednesday's trade. But does adding Mayfield make the Panthers a playoff team in 2022? Mayfield also will have to prove himself to first-year Panthers offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, who, in a 2018 New York Post story, rated Mayfield sixth among the top quarterbacks in the draft. If it works out, and the 27-year-old Mayfield is successful, Carolina could have the long-term solution at quarterback it has been looking for since coach Matt Rhule took over the team in 2020. If it doesn’t, Carolina will be back in the quarterback market – and possibly head coaching market in 2023.
For Sam Mills, the USFL was both first and last chance
Mills had been cut by the Browns after a solid showing in training camp in 1981. A trip to camp with the CFL's Toronto Argonauts ended the same way the following year. It was reasonable to believe another chance wasn't going to come.
