Bryce Young got offensive help he needed via Panthers' draft

Word from the camp of Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young during the third day of the 2024 NFL draft was "loving it.'' He should be. While new coach Dave Canales insisted this draft wasn't about surrounding the top pick of the 2023 draft with great players but, rather, building a great team for Young to "do his one-eleventh,'' Carolina's draft felt looked it was all about Young. The whole offseason has felt that way. It began with new general manager Dan Morgan spending $150 million on upgrading the middle of the offensive line with guards Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis. Thirty-five of Young's team-record 62 sacks last season came from the guard and center positions.

It continued with a trade for Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson, who, over the past two seasons, had an NFL-best 94 open score, an ESPN analytic that defines the likelihood a receiver would complete a catch if targeted. No Carolina receiver ranked in the top 40 during that span. Carolina also made upgrades on defense with third-round pick Trevin Wallace at inside linebacker. Bottom line: The roster around Young is more complete than it was this time last year after Carolina sent two first-round picks and former first-round receiver DJ Moore to the Chicago Bears to move up from No. 9 to select the quarterback No. 1 overall.

Panthers agree to deal with veteran RB Rashaad Penny

The Carolina Panthers' backfield is getting crowded. The team agreed to a contract with former first-round pick Rashaad Penny, reuniting him with head coach Dave Canales from their days with the Seattle Seahawks. Terms were not disclosed. Penny joins 2024 second-round pick Jonathon Brooks, Chuba Hubbard, Miles Sanders and Raheem Blackshear in Carolina's backfield.

Penny is very familiar with Canales' system, which features the run and versatility. He had his best season with the Seahawks in 2021 when Canales was the passing game coordinator and new Carolina offensive coordinator Brad Idzik was an offensive assistant. He rushed 119 times for 749 yards and six touchdowns.

Penny, 28, played last season for the Philadelphia Eagles, but he appeared in just three games and rushed 11 times for 33 yards. Selected by the Seahawks in the first round (27th overall) of the 2018 draft, he has rushed for 1,951 yards and 13 touchdowns in six seasons.

what are the panthers' plans for rookie rb jonathan brooks?
Carolina traded up six spots to select Texas running back Jonathan Brooks No. 46 overall less than a month after new coach Dave Canales talked about how "fired up'' he was with the backfield combination of Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders. The Panthers had seven total rushing touchdowns in 2023, tied with the New York jets and Minnesota Vikings for fewest in the NFL.

**********
Some draft analysts called it a "reach'' because Brooks is coming off surgery to repair a torn right ACL and for what Carolina gave up to get him -- 1,930 points (picks No. 52, No. 142, No. 155) for 1,060 points (pick No. 46) on the Fitzgerald-Spielberger NFL draft trade value chart.

Carolina Panthers schedule 2024: Takeaways, predictions

The Carolina Panthers' 2024 schedule was released along with the rest of the NFL slate Wednesday. The league didn't do first-year head coach Dave Canales any favors. He will begin the process of rebuilding the league's worst team last season by playing two of his first three games and three of his first five on the road against the New Orleans Saints, Las Vegas Raiders and Chicago Bears. That also means the process of rebuilding quarterback Bryce Young, coming off a dreadful rookie season after being the top pick of the 2023 draft, begins in front of loud, hostile crowds. But if Canales and Young can survive those games, they can take solace in having the third-easiest schedule in the NFL based on last year's results.

Strength of schedule

The Panthers are tied for the third-easiest schedule in the league (opponents had a .467 winning percentage in 2023).

Bold prediction

The Panthers will win eight games. It doesn't get much bolder than this since they've averaged 5.1 wins the past six seasons and haven't won more than seven games in a season since 2017, when they went 11-5. But with the league's third-easiest schedule, a weak NFC South and a much-improved roster, the potential is there. Remember, they won seven games in 2002 coming off an NFL-worst 1-15 record.

Canales: QB Young 'doing fantastic' in Panthers' new offense

New Carolina Panthers coach Dave Canales loves the way quarterback Bryce Young has picked up an offense that has helped Baker Mayfield, Russell Wilson and Geno Smith have career seasons. Young, the top pick of the 2023 draft, loves Canales technique and having only one primary voice in his ear. He said the latter in particular has been "super important'' after a disastrous rookie season in which he went between then- coach Frank Reich and offensive coordinator Thomas Brown as play callers. Young needed a positive change after a rookie season in which he ranked 29th out of 30 qualified quarterbacks in Total QBR (33.4), 33rd in completion percentage (59.8%) and 28th in touchdown passes (11).

Mayfield had a career-high 4,044 yards passing and 28 touchdown passes with Canales as his offensive coordinator. Wilson had a career-high 4,212 yards passing and 40 touchdowns in 2020 with Canales as the passing game coordinator. Smith had a career-high 4,282 yards passing and 30 touchdowns in 2022 with Canales as his quarterbacks coach.

Panthers' Bryce Young showing 'swag' after disastrous 2023

The first practice of voluntary offseason workouts was almost over Monday when Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young uncorked a pass over the middle to wide receiver Dontae Johnson. Swag wasn't a word used to describe the No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 draft during his rookie season. He ranked near the bottom of the NFL in almost every major statistical category. At times he looked shell-shocked during the Panthers' NFL-worst 2-15 season, going 2-14 as the starter, with coach Frank Reich being fired after a 1-10 start. It's way too early to predict whether Young and the offense will make a huge leap from being last in the NFL in total offense (265.3 yards per game) and tied for last in scoring (13.9 points per game). But there is reason for optimism, and past turnarounds by No. 1 overall picks indicate there could be significant improvement.

panthers seek $650m from charlotte for stadium renovations
The proposal for the long-term partnership took place during the city council's economic development meeting outlining renovations that would take place between 2025 and 2029. The city council is expected to vote whether to approve the partnership on June 24. This would be the first major renovation since the stadium was completed in 1996 and paid for by sale of permanent seat licenses.

**********
Renovations to the stadium, which also is the home of the Charlotte Football Club, are to include:

  • Brand-new seats installed throughout the bowl.
  • Improved accessibility throughout the facility, designed and constructed in a way that allows individuals with a range of disabilities to have access without barriers.
  • Stadium safety and security enhancements, including illuminated wayfinding and improved lighting.
  • A reimagined South Lawn Pavilion area that can be used as a community gathering spot and outdoor classroom on game days and non-event days.
  • Upgraded restrooms throughout the stadium for better sustainability, accessibility and speed of service.
  • Enhancements to the stadium exterior to reaffirm its place as an iconic, beloved fixture of the Charlotte skyline.

How Panthers' revamped TE corps can help Bryce Young

Carolina Panthers tight end Tommy Tremblewas in full stride early during team drills on Wednesday when he caught a pass on a crossing route and turned up field for a big play. On the next play, tight end Ian Thomas caught a pass over the middle for a solid gain. The trend continued later. Tight ends making plays has been anything but a trend for Carolina the past four seasons. Over the past four seasons, seven Carolina tight ends totaled 181 catches for 1,734 yards and 10 touchdowns to rank last in the NFL in all three categories. The next lowest total was 248 catches for 2,321 yards and 12 touchdowns. The NFL average for that span was 319 catches for 3,354 yards and 25.1 touchdowns. Carolina has ranked 24th or worse in scoring each season during that span, including 31st during an NFL-worst 2-15 2023 season.

Panthers' Jaycee Horn healthy, ready to shine in 2024
Horn has allowed an opposing QB passer rating of 71.7. Among 194 defensive backs to be targeted 75-plus times since 2021, that ranks 18th. Allowed an average of 2.9 yards after the catch, which ranks 19th among that same group. Allowed 6.5 yards per target. The league average for defensive backs since 2021 is 7.5.

**********
What Horn (6-foot-1, 200 pounds) doesn't have is a history of being healthy. His 22 games played out of a possible 51 are the second fewest by a cornerback selected in the top 10 of the draft over the past 20 years.

showboats wide receiver davis signs with panthers
Memphis Showboats wide receiver Daewood Davis has signed a contract with the National Football League’s Carolina Panthers. Davis, an All-UFL honoree, finished the 2024 United Football League regular season ranked No. 6 in total receptions with 41 and No. 7 in receiving yards with 446. His five touchdown receptions were tied for No. 2 in the UFL. Davis scored 31 points during the 2024 season (5 TDs, 1 1-pt PAT) to rank No. 6 in the league.

**********
Davis was an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins coming out of Western Kentucky in 2023 and was waived after an injury in a Week 3 preseason game. This will be his second stint on an NFL roster.

Charlotte City Council OK's Panthers stadium renovation plan

The Charlotte City Council voted Monday night to approve a joint $800 million stadium renovation plan with the Panthers that ties the NFL team to the city for the next 20 years. Tepper already has invested more than $117 million in stadium upgrades and also has agreed to another estimated $421 million in potential overages for capital improvements over the term of the deal. The city's investment would be funded by existing hospitality and tourism tax resources, which are required by the state to be spent on projects to support the city's tourism economy. The vote passed by a 7-3 margin.

The Panthers have struggled since Tepper purchased the team in 2018, compiling a 31-68 record while going through six head coaches. The Panthers finished a league-worst 2-15 last season, one year after drafting quarterback Bryce Young with the No. 1 pick. The Panthers opened play at Bank of America Stadium in 1996, and it is now considered one of the older stadiums in the league. The stadium renovations are expected to be completed by 2029. Among the improvements slated are upgraded video and audio systems, modernized infrastructure, redesigned concourses, unique social areas with skyline views and exterior spaces for community gatherings and programming.
