Panthers sticking with Dalton after Young shines late in loss
The first-year NFL head coach, who was hired to turn Young around from a 2-15 rookie season, said the decision to bring the former Heisman Trophy winner in for mop-up duty had as much to do with protecting Dalton with two offensive line starters out with injuries as anything else. The Panthers lost center Austin Corbett to a biceps injury and right tackle Taylor Moton to an elbow injury in the second half. Both will underdo MRIs on Monday. Corbett left the locker room with his arm in a sling.Canales has been adamant that he still believes in developing Young to one day be a franchise quarterback. He has said there are no plans to move Young before the Nov. 5 trade deadline, even though sources have told ESPN that other teams have inquired about the quarterback. But Sunday was all about protecting Dalton to have him ready for next week. Young had never been benched, but he's not letting it publicly frustrate him. Asked what the biggest adjustment has been for him the past three weeks, he smiled and said, "Honestly, it's a long list.''

Carolina TopCats Cheerleaders are the official cheerleading squad of the NFL's Carolina Panrhers. The TopCats perform during home games at Bank of America Stadium, the home stadium of the Panthers. In 2022, the TopCats became the first cheerleading team of the National Football League to hire an openly transgender cheerleader. The squad was founded in 1995. With Mariota running the show, Washington chugged along and racked up 421 yards against the Panthers (1-6), The defense dominated, allowing 180 yards, stopping seven of 10 third-down chances and sacking Dalton twice. Dalton completed 26 of 37 passes and becoming the first NFL quarterback this season to post a 300-yard, three-TD performance. Dalton has thrown for 1,027 yards and 10 TDs in four career starts against the Raiders...gardner Minshew completed 18 of 28 passes for 214 yards with a touchdown and interception. The Las Vegas running game, which entered the game last in the league with a 49-yard average, totaled just 55 yards.

The Commanders did just fine without Daniels for a vast majority of the game. Behind two touchdown passes from Mariota and a 67-yard pick-6 of Andy Dalton by Dante Fowler....Dalton finished 11 of 16 for 93 yards, and Young entered in mop-up duty with 4:55 left, completing two passes for negative yardage.

Panthers' Bryce Young to start after Dalton hurts thumb in crash
Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young hoped to get another chance to start this season, but not the way it has happened. Veteran Andy Dalton sprained the thumb on his right throwing hand Tuesday when he was in a multicar accident in which he was driving with his wife, three children and dog about seven miles from Bank of America Stadium. Coach Dave Canales called Young on Tuesday night to inform him he would be the starter Sunday at Denver and announced it publicly Wednesday after a practice in which the top pick of the 2023 draft took all the first-team reps while Dalton observed. Young was benched in favor of Dalton after an 0-2 start in which he threw three interceptions to no touchdowns. Dalton won his debut against the Las Vegas Raiders but lost his last four starts for the 1-6 Panthers. Bryce Young took the snap like he would at any practice, but then he headed for the edge on a designed quarterback sweep, something he wouldn't normally do. With a blocker ahead, the No. 1 pick of the 2023 draft, now running the Carolina Panthers' scout team, kicked into high gear and raced 20 yards for a first down. This week, Young was set to play the role of Bo Nix, the 2024 No. 12 pick, for Sunday's game at the Denver Broncos (4:25 p.m. ET, CBS) until Carolina starter Andy Dalton suffered a sprained thumb on his throwing hand in a Tuesday car accident that propelled Young back into the starting lineup. Ever since Young was benched after an 0-2 start, his role has been to provide the first-team defense with the best look possible at the opposing quarterback. It's a job Young took seriously, although imitating Daniels was somewhat of a challenge because of his unique physical skills. Young may have lost his starting job, but he didn't lose the competitive nature and confidence that helped him win the 2021 Heisman Trophy at Alabama. He didn't lose the ability to make plays, even if was mostly on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Young didn't excel as a starter. In 18 games, he ranked at or near the bottom of the league in most major categories. He had no touchdowns and three interceptions with a league-worst 12.6 Total QBR this season before being replaced.
