I wasn't sure if you considered yourself frau or fraulein, so I went with friend... sorta.

It's a learning experience.

Anyone over 18 or 21 is Frau. fraulein is for young girls.

Ah. I played it safe by assuming any unmarried woman could be called "fraulein." That's nice to know.

Um, not to be too nitpicky, but actually, there are not many Germans who will say Fräulein to a woman or girl. It's pretty old-fashioned and might even be considered condescending in some places. When you talk with or about a woman older than 16, the common term would be Frau. When you address young girls, you just call them by their first name or say "junge Frau".

I've not read Brigitte in years. And that was the BIG issue 20 years ago. DO unmarried women have the RIGHTto call themselves FRAU?! Then, we just have to read all the antique Göthe, and they would translate Jungfrau into Virgin. What a hoot! Well, Virgin, what did you learn in school today?
