Final Fantasy VII - Remake (And Final Fantasy General)

XII has some similarities to Xenoblade Chronicles, you might like that one? It's a semi-open world, kinda MMORPGy in battle system and quest structure, and the plot is basically Star Wars.

They made a few of them. 9 is an awesome one to get familiarized with. And the Switch version is great, not only for being remastered but also because if you just get tired of grinding you can turn on cheat mode and deal 9999 points of damage with every hit.

I am playing Final Fantasy IX. I'm not far into it (I'm in the ice cavern) so these are very early thoughts. Remember I have no nostalgia for this game or anything non-Nintendo; I'm certain I would have enjoyed it more if I played it 21 years ago. Overall I'm liking it so far! The characters seem pretty good and what I've seen of the story is interesting (okay haven't seen much yet.) The cinematics and the character models are nice. On the downside, the environments are ugly as fuck. Yeah I know there's a reason for this (they lost the original files or something?) and it's not entierly fair of me to judge a 21 year old game in this way. Nevertheless, it's true. Also the environments are a bit confusing, there's been several times where I've had to search for the exit of any given screen because it's not clear at all. Combat seems fine though I was taking a lot of damage in the early fights and this brings me to the biggest issue...I'm not sure I want to go through dozens of hours of old school grinding. It's just a daunting prospect! I gave up on Octopath Traveler a couple of years ago because I cou;dn't be bothered leveling my eight characters up. And that was a modern game! I know there's a cheat mode here that lets you just breeze through every battle, but wouldn't I find that a bit unsatisfying? I don't know. I'm going to keep playing as I do like it, I just can't guarantee my attention won't be taken away by something new and flashy.

UPDATE: Steiner accused Zidane of "touching" Garnet while she was asleep. Garnet wanted to change her name to "Dagger" but I thought that was a stupid name so changed it to "Natalie." Still not decided if I'll cheat the battles or not, advice needed.

The remasters have the speed-up option for a reason; I used it liberally during my most recent playthrough for trash mobs. Also useful for getting Chocographs and the Hot and Cold mini-game. Toggling random encounters if I'm trying to get somewhere specific on the overworld is nice. Deffo don't consider any of them "cheating" just a nice convenience to speed up some of the more grindy parts dramatically. My grind patience isn't what it was 21 years ago. The other boosts like infinite Gil and XP are permanent I think and would just ruin the game IMO. I didn't use them.

I enjoyed what I played of IX but I took a break from it to play a new game (can't remember what) and umm still haven't gone back to it in 3 and a half years.
