APOD: 2015 September 29 - Supermoon Total Lunar Eclipse and Lightning Storm

Explanation: What's more rare than a supermoon total lunar eclipse? How about a supermoon total lunar eclipse over a lightning storm. Such an electrifying sequence was captured yesterday from Ibiza, an island in southeastern Spain. After planning the location for beauty, and the timing to capture the entire eclipse sequence, the only thing that had to cooperate for this astrophotographer to capture a memorable eclipse sequence was the weather. What looked to be a bother on the horizon, though, turned out to be a blessing. The composite picture features over 200 digitally combined images from the same location over the course of a night. The full moon is seen setting as it faded to red in Earth's shadow and then returned to normal. The fortuitous lightning is seen reflected in the Mediterranean to the right of the 400-meter tall rocky island of Es Vedra. Although the next total eclipse of a large and bright supermoon will occur in 2033, the next total eclipse of any full moon will occur in January 2018 and be best visible from eastern Asia and Australia.

WILL I EVEN BE ALIVE IN 2033? I BET IT WILL BE CLOUDY THEN TOO :rwmad:

We had clear skies here, unlike during the solar eclipse. But it happened between about 1 and 3 in the morning, so I couldn't really afford to stay up and watch.

The whole supermoon thing annoys me, though. It never appears that much bigger, so I think it raises unfounded expectations for non-sciencey people to make out it's going to be an incredible sight. It means they're less likely to take notice next time something genuinely impressive happens in science.

The super moon thing was fun to talk about at the flat earth society, because there was a goofy theory that moonlight was harmful and you shouldn't ever go out in it. Also there are moon shrimps.

All I know is, my new laptop is breaking down, I got really sick, and work won't let up.

If it ain't the moon, then it's someone else that's been piling it on for me this past month...

The Orionid meteor showers started a couple days ago and I didn't even know about it The Orionid Meteor Shower Is Tonight and Here's How to Watch It I guess the peak has already passed. BUT OMG I SAW A METEOR THIS MORNING!! I haven't been able to see any for years now, and I'VE SEEN ONE I CAN DIE OKAY :rwmad: I was outside with the dog at 6am, and just happened to be looking at the sky, and there was Orion and some weird alignment of planets (oh it's Jupiter Venus and Mars October 2015 guide to the five visible planets | Astronomy Essentials | EarthSky ) and the meteor went away from Orion sort of towards the planets, not exactly but kinda. I probably won't see another one FOREVER, because the peak hours are usually in the middle of the night, and also there are too many trees. I guess I was just lucky this morning.
