How to be a good wife

Caitriona

Something Wicked
A Good Wifes Guide

This article appeared in one of the popular ladies journals of 1955. (Good Housekeeping) I think.

1. Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready, on time for his return. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospect of a good meal (especially his favorite dish) is part of the warm welcome needed.

2. Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you’ll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh looking. He has just been with a lot of work weary people.

3. Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it.

4. Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives.

5. Gather up schoolbooks, toys, paper etc. and then run a dust cloth over the tables.

6. Over the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too. After all, catering for his comfort will provide you with immense personal satisfaction.

7. Prepare the children. Take a few minutes to wash the children’s hands and faces (if they are small), comb their hair and, if necessary, change their clothes. They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part. Minimize all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer or vacuum. Try to encourage the children to be quiet.

8. Be happy to see him.

9. Greet him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him.

10. Listen to him. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first–remember his topics of conversation are more important than yours.

11. Make the evening his. Never complain if he comes home late or goes out to dinner, or other places of entertainment without you. Instead, try to understand his world of strain and pressure and his very real need to be at home and relax.

12. Your goal: Try to make sure your home is a place of peace, order and tranquility where your husband can renew himself in body and spirit.

13. Don’t greet him with complaints and problems.

14. Don’t complain if he’s late home for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through that day.

15. Make him comfortable. Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or have him lie down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him. -

16. Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice.

17. Don’t ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.

18. A good wife always knows her place.

I happent to agree with all of the above. If he's out makin' bacon and you don't have to work outside the home, the least a woman can do is be pleasing to the man who essentially takes care of her. I LOVE IT! I so wanna be a house wife.

L_G, my first reaction to your post was this: "WTF? This is an intelligent woman, and she wants to confine herself to the house? What about a fulfilling career? What about living life for herself instead of living for some man?"

After thinking about it for a few minutes, I concede the fact that being a housewife might be what's fulfilling for you, and you could certainly use your skills to run a successful household, and raise a happy family. I hope you find what you are seeking. :)

^I don't watch anything with Julia Roberts in it and I don't watch anything with a Sheen in it so I wouldn't know.

Feminist garbage.

"What about living life for herself instead of living for some man?"

No, living for the family.

But, that's what relationships are. You live for one another. She would be living for herself and her husband. There's nothing morally wrong with that.

So have that hot friend he's been eyeing over for dinner and a threesome. That'll be a little gay and a little more interesting.

Let's just break it down bit by bit.

What? You're not going to eat? And you have been thinking about him and you have been concerned about his needs, he is your husband.

2. Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you’ll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh looking. He has just been with a lot of work weary people.

I don't know about a ribbon but that was the 50's this is now and what's wrong with not looking like a haggerd wreck? Women, even homemakers should take pride in their appearence. If you need a Maury Povich make over you should never have been born female. You're lucky enough to be a woman be proud to show it.

3. Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it.

Duty? No. Pleasure, yes. A woman can better herself by staying educated and interesting so I see nothing wrong with this, everyone wins.

4. Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives.

There shouldn't be clutter to begin with.

5. Gather up schoolbooks, toys, paper etc. and then run a dust cloth over the tables.

There shouldn't be dust, you should have been running a Swiffer Duster over the furniture long before your husband's arrival home. The children can gather their own books and toys and put them away, a twist on the 21 century.

6. Over the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too. After all, catering for his comfort will provide you with immense personal satisfaction.

This is lovely...Nothing like flipping the little switch on the gas fire place, I mean really? How hard is that?

I see nothing wrong with this at all. A little quiet time never hurt anyone, even children. Also, it's not like they have to be quiet for the rest of the night, just until Dad's had a break (and mom too if you think about it).

8. Be happy to see him.

I'll be just as happy to see him as he is to see me.

9. Greet him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him.

I can't believe they even had to tell women this.

10. Listen to him. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first–remember his topics of conversation are more important than yours.

This is the one I have to say I don't agree with so no comment.

11. Make the evening his. Never complain if he comes home late or goes out to dinner, or other places of entertainment without you. Instead, try to understand his world of strain and pressure and his very real need to be at home and relax.

Apparently we've reached the "Load of Crap" section of this list. Shame, I was quite enjoying it. However, give and take, give and take.

12. Your goal: Try to make sure your home is a place of peace, order and tranquility where your husband can renew himself in body and spirit.

And for you too.

13. Don’t greet him with complaints and problems.

Well, no one likes that so I have to agree.

14. Don’t complain if he’s late home for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through that day.

They really need to move this back to the "Load of Crap" section, it doesn't belong here.

15. Make him comfortable. Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or have him lie down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him. -

Again, I see no problem with this.

16. Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice.

I'm not keen on taking off my man's shoes for him but if it really made him happy, I'd do it.

17. Don’t ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.

*beep, beep, beep, beep* MOVIN' IT TO THE CRAP SECTION, CLEAR THE WAY!

18. A good wife always knows her place.

True. Beside and never behind or in front of her husband.

Fortunately for modern women modern men weren't raised to expect any of this so the chances of a modern woman ever having to perform in such a manner is extremely low. However, can you imagine the success rate of marriages if husbands and wives did a little of this every day? Showing appreciation goes a long way in any relationship.

I'd like to add #19:

Don't bitch him out when he comes home with a new firearm. They are his recreation. And, if you do, he might just not say anything when he buys his next gun.

I've seen this before, and my only comment is...

Oh, for crying out loud... ;)

Actually there is a different between then and now. Then we were told we *had* to do it. Now, we can choose to do it willingly.

I think if we updated it a little from the 1950's POV, I'd quite agree with a lot of it. If your gonna be married, then be a wife not a feminist. There were consequences to feminism, a lot of them, feminists won't admit. One of them was the consequences to marriages. We forgot what being a wife meant. I think we need to remember again.

I'm glad we can choose now, but there are a lot of choices I'd make that do fall on that list. ;)

^^The only problem I have with modern feminists is that they seem to forget that the ultimate goal of the movement was to provide women with as many choices as men.

Haven't we gotten to that point? Honestly, haven't we?

We have. So, the feminist movement being superfluous, the modern feminist no longer concerns herself with assuring equal choice, she concerns herself with women making the right choices, i.e. those that completely conform with her views and opinions.

The modern feminist cannot fathom how a woman could possibly be happy being "just" a wife and mother. To the modern feminist, this woman is either ignorant or brainwashed by the "patriarchy".
