Iron Fist

People are saying it looks like Arrow, and it does a bit I guess, but many superheroes have similar backstories.

This "drops" on Netflix tomorrow. It's been the worst reviewed MCU property ever but I'm obviously still going to watch it. Gotta catch 'em all!

Aaaaah. Been looking for it today! Oops.

The reviews are very bad, mostly saying it's boring, which is about the worst thing you can say about a TV show. At least if something is shallow or stupid it can still be entertaining. But a lot of these people are comparing it to how great Luke Cage was, and I didn't think Luke Cage was great at all, so there's every chance I'll disagree with the critics about this one as well.

I've watched three episodes here are some early thoughts.

It's okay. The big problem is that it's quite generic. Daredevil was similarly paced in its own first season but had more style with Matt's blindness and the way they shot the action (that hallway fight still hasn't been bettered.) Jessica Jones certainly had its own themes and wherther you liked Luke Cage or not I think you'll agree that it had its own identity. This just feels like any super hero tv show, not any different from something like Arrow. But again that doesn't make it bad...

The biggest problem so far I find is that Danny's character is just a bit dull? I don't really get him yet. There was a bit in the first episode where he went all angry and it just felt weird. I like Colleen Wing a LOT more and I KNOW you're thinking I'm being biased because she's a cute girl, but I genuinely think Jessica Henwick is doing better work than Finn Jones. I like how she trains kids by beating them up in the city!

Faramir of Gondor is doing some good work as the villain even though (so far) the character isn't anywhere near as interesting as Fisk or Kilgrave. There's also the weird thing where the guy playing his son looks the same age as him?

I like Joy so far because I can't tell if she's going to end up good or evil?

So yeah, not bad but I think it'll take me a while to get through as I don't feel like watching anymore right now when I could be playing Zelda instead.

I finished the season. FULL SEASON SPOILERS BELOW.

It was...okay, I guess. There was nothing truly terrible but it didn't do anything new or exciting either. It felt very very familiar. I predicted most of the plot twists because I've watched so many super hero tv shows and this seemed like a remix of the previous Netfix shows with a bit of Arrow thrown in. And without its own identity.

The biggest problem is that I didn't really care about Danny's character. I was prepared to give Finn Jones a chance and I don't know if it was all his fault or just the writing, but Danny just seemed kind of dumb and naive and not in a lovable way. There were some scenes where he was quite charming (like when he was working in the office) but the scenes of his character struggling with his destiny didn't work for me. His story was the pretty standard "what should I do with my powers!" thing and I'm not even sure what he decided in the end? I'm also sick of the thing where the hero debates whether he should kill the vllain or not. I'm not saying I want the hero to kill, but I don't need to hear endless arguments about it either! Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Arrow, The Flash and probably most other super hero shows have all done this stuff and I've seen enough of it.

I liked Colleen Wing a lot more than Danny, though it was weird how her character seemed to change halfway through the season. It seemed like her arc was going to invovle an addiction to violence but then it was just suddenly revealed "she was in The Hand all along!" They could have foreshadowed that a lot more. And it made her seem really dumb for trusting Bakuto when that guy was really obviously evil. And he sounded like Zoolander when he talked. Still, Jessica Henwick did a good job with it al.

David Wenham was good as Harold but I feel like he should have been more involved in the plot. He spent twelve episodes mostly sitting in his home obviously manipulating Danny and it was only in the final episode that he went full on evil (okay he killed his assistant before that but nobody else knew about it) and became a threat to Danny. I figured out that he'd killed Danny's parents about three episodes in whereas it took Danny until the season finale to realise it.

I liked Joy at the start but her character just seemed to randomly decide to be a bad guy in the end? She should have had more scenes with Danny. Really that's the problem with the Meachums: so many of their scenes were completely seperate from Danny. It would cut away from the main plot to show this brother and sister arguing and I'd wonder what the point was.

Ward...I actually liked him in the end? When he killed his father halfway throught I thought "oh, they're doing that thing where he kills the main villain and becomes the REAL main villain" so I was actually pleasantly surprised that he ended up on the good side. The actor did a good job showing the different sides of his character.

Rosario Dawson was great as always. Claire is the best character in all of the Marvel Netflix series and even in the weaker shows she's always a bright spot.

I feel like they should have brought Davos in earlier so we could have seen him and Danny team up a few more times before his inevitable heel turn.

I like Madam Gao well enough, but it's a bit confusing how they showed she has some kind of super strength and could throw Danny around, yet later she was capture by him...putting her in an armlock?

I appreciated that they showed a different side of the Hand. In Daredevil season two they were all faceless ninjas but here we got some variety with the karaoke guy, the sexy poison lady and the drunk guy. The fight with the drunk guy was the most entertaining fight of the season (Colleen's sword fights were good too.) Most of the other fight scenes were just "pretty good, I guess?" at best

So yeah it wasn't a total disaster but I don't need a season two unless it's significantly better. Just do a Claire Temple show where she teams up with Colleen and keep Danny in situations where he doesn't have to carry a show.

Yeah the real problem with Iron Fist is that it really gave me no reason to care about The Iron Fist. He starts off being a out-of-touch guy who everyone thinks is crazy (everything involving the mental institution was terrible especially because Legion is a thing) and then he's an out-of-touch rich guy who can't run a company, until he's just a rich guy with a glowy hand.

Like, that's it. That's all he is. It's really boring! Like, Matt Murdock has to manage his role as an attorney with his role as Daredevil, Jessica Jones is an alcoholic trying to confront her traumatic past, Luke Cage is dealing with his own past while at the same time tackling the various societal issues in Harlem and Danny Rand is just kind of annoyed that his fist maybe doesn't glow sometimes.

Every other character on the show (pretty much) is more interesting than Danny, which is really bad. I guess the show could work if it had a strong central villain to focus on instead, but the show can never make up its mind who the actual villain is! It's Ward! No, it's Harold! No, it's Madame Gao! No, it's Bakuto! No wait maybe it's actually Ward! No, is it Davos? Wait, I think it's definitely Bakuto NO WAIT IT'S WARD.

None of these characters are bad, in fact some of them are actually really good, but the whole thing felt really unfocused.

Rosario Dawson is great though.

I'm about halfway. The last one I watched was when Ward and Mel C were ousted from the company and everyone went to China (but it looked like anywhere).

Colleen Wing is the best thing. And Madame Gau. And anyone who isn't Danny Bland, really. I just can't take him seriously. Maybe I wouldn't be able to take anyone seriously who was talking about their "chi", but definitely not him.

Anyway, it's much more watchable than Luke Cage. The fight scenes consist of more than bullets bouncing off of someone or a door falling over.

The boardroomy scenes can be a bit dull, especially when Ward is so unlikeable, but as it goes on those scenes tie in more to the overall story.

SORT OF.

Mel C lol.

I liked Luke Cage more on the whole but Iron First was probably better paced? Like at least it didn't build up a good actor as the villain then kill him off randomly halfway through and bring in a never before mentioned overacting brother.

I finally watched all the Marvel Netflix stuff! I saved this one for last Trying to keep things chronological. I messed up and watched Luke Cage before Jessica Jones. Despite that, it didnt take away from my enjoyment of either series. Daredevil, and Jessica Jones were my favorites.

Anyways, As far as Iron fist goes,
I liked it. That said, It was definitely the weakest of the Marvel Netflix shows. Colleen Wing is gorgeous, and I'd watch her in any kind of series. Asian women make me weak, a Thick Asian woman makes me, uh even weaker. Seeing her run around in gym clothes was the highlight. I dont know if her acting was that great. I was too busy staring at her beautiful face, smile, and her uh, other qualities. What was funny was her Dark side showed up, and quickly evaporated while Everyone else just got darker as the show went on. Even by the time she revealed she was in the Hand, you knew she was a good egg who wasn't going to turn on Danny. I liked all the characters alot, but there definitely seemed like they tried to cram a lot into 13 episodes to make them all relevant. There were TOO many characters to focus on. Rosario Dawson showing back up as nurse to the superheroes was nice too. The Hand came off really weak in this series. I guess Daredevil, and Elektra ran off all the good members.

I look forward to seeing the Defenders. I liked all the leads, and I look forward to the chemistry when they all get together. But, one fear is that all the supporting characters will show up too, taking away from the main story, and overall flow of the series. Much like they did at times in this one.

I just started the first episode. SO FAR IT SEEMS LIKE MORE NINJA STUFF :rwmad: lol

Anyway, I wanted to bump up this thread so I could post in it as I watch.

ONE EPISODE DOWN TWELVE TO GO.

Not as exciting as some of the others so far, but I guess it's too soon to tell EVEN THOUGH MOST OF YOU THINK IT WAS BORING.
