Is suicide a selfish act?

Is suicide a selfish act?

No.

Yes.

Hmm, depends. I know that sounds flippant, but it's really not.

My first instinct is to say no, but then I've heard of people killing themselves to make others pay. And that is indeed selfish, not to mention a total lack of reasoning power. I mean if I wanted someone to pay so badly that taking my life was a consideration - then I'd damn well want to make that someone pay, but still be around to see the pain.

However, there are others who live in pain (mental does count) almost all the time, and death seems the only way to end the suffering. In those cases, I would say not selfish at all.

I suppose to decide which one must look at the little clues that are so easily missed first time around. Also, if there is a note left, that might be a good indicator.

The act of suicide - is it a self centred pansy wimp out?

Or is this method of thinking, in itself, a selfish thought - i.e. I am not thinking about the person who has died.
For some people, I'd consider suicide to be for the betterment of mankind.

Is there less selfish ways of killing yourself - i.e. is chucking yourself off a boat in the Atlantic less selfish that hanging yourself in the spare bedroom.

I need to know, it is antagonising my already chronic insomnia.

Hmmm? http://www.wordforge.net/showthread.php?t=36105

*ROTFLMAO* It seems MESSENGER/ZODIAC owns TROLLKINGDOM also. I absolutely wonder if he even spares 5 minutes OFFLINE. The man is EVERYWHERE.

How bizarre, that they have actually copied my post word for word.

Can someone confirm to me that the Zodiac on Crud forge is Zodiac / Messenger elsewhere?. I think I joined there about 6 months ago as headvoid or headspace - can't honestly remember.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but I'm not Zodiacs dual.

I don't believe that anyone can decide for another person whether living or dying is the right choice to make. Of course, there are pros and cons to each point, but who the hell are you (speaking generally) to dictate when a person should/should not die.

What if a terminally ill patient doesn't want to live months or years in agony? What if someone simply feels that they have fulfilled their purpose on Earth? I have always been of the belief that the decision is in their hands--and their hands only.

IMO, It is selfish to make that decision for another person.

Just my $.02

My brother committed suicide 6 years ago.
I can only bare it because i have to. I couldnt be so selfish as to cripple my family the way he did.

In my opinion, suicide is selfish, but consider it against other actions.

For instance, if a guy hates his life and is getting drunk every day and beating his kids, isn't it theoretically less selfish for that person to off himself than continue down that road? Couldn't someone's suicide theoretically do less damage than another alternative?

And to you guys above talking about how there is no reason to be sad in the civilized world, that's just shit. I can point to a hundred examples of people who would rather be dead than dealing with the situation they are in. Just because you drive a nice car doesn't mean your life has any intrinsic meaning or lacks for pain.

No, because if that person kills himself rather than trying to help himself, he will be (as I said) the ultimate coward.

"The ultimate coward"? I can think of more cowardly things, to be honest. There is some amount of bravery to jumping off a ten-story building, for example.

I sure as shit couldn't do it!!

Note also that you said, "tried to help himself." What if the guy is a child molester who's been to jail twice, been through more treatment programs than you can shake a stick at, and still masturbates to disturbing ideas every night?

There are times when a suicide is an OK thing, I think. Like, if Usama bin Laden decides he can't keep playing this game anymore tonight, that's just fine by me.

Like what? Cuz you used jumping off a building as an example, but you said that take an amount of bravery, so exactly how would you explain that to be a more cowardly act if you say that that same act is brave?

Since this guy is a hypothetical person, let's assume he's from Texas, where, as Ron White puts it: they have the death penality, mand they use it!!!

Just kill the bastard. Don't wait for him to commit suicide cuz Mr. Molester probably won't do himself in if he likes his perverted lifestyle.

Can't really argue with that, but bin Laden could also simply decide to turn himself in to US authorities.

BTW, I think it's Osama. :)
