He was cool in the early-mid 80s, from Diner thru 9 1/2 Weeks & Angel Heart.

Then he did Barfly, started beating up his girlfriends and took up boxing, which ended his 'cool' period. He was probably the little voice in Anne Heche's and Margot Kidder's heads instructing them how to sell crazy.
