Actually, modern Egyptians are a rather mixed people. Some of them have a light skin, others are clearly of African descent, most are a nice light brown. There are even blondes and redheads (often with dark skin). It has historical reasons.
Apparently this mixture has been there for millennia. Compare the pale almost caukasian features of Akhenaten (here a statue made in his later years, after the famous Amarna-style, and more realistic) with the African complexion of his grandmother Tiye.
