Fun fact: I've never actually read a Green Lantern comic (not sure why!), but I've certainly seen the characters in other things and know the general idea. Setting it on Earth with only human characters is certainly a way to save on CGI, I guess!

I'm not terribly up on my Green Lantern lore. Hal became Big Bad villain Parallaxis in one of them massive crossover epic series that were the vogue around the end of the 20th century, so maybe him being a bitter old douche isn't a stretch.

Mongul destroyed Coast City Hal's hometown. Hal understandably went mad with grief.
