Given the horrendous state of the world and the depressive nature of the news, I'm pretty much good for the lowest of lowest stakes and lightest of light entertainment at the moment. Not in the mood for anything gritty or dramatic. As a result, gave this a go. I Just listen to TalkSPORT all day while working and then on to shit like this to watch with my dinner.

It's.. fine. It's not GREAT by any stretch, but it does have some amusing moments. Mostly involving Bob but everyone is decent. Finished the first series and already watched the first three eps of series 2. (they brought Bob back for series 2 because.. well if anybody watches the show you will realise why)

I watched the first series and ended up thinking "I could win this, because none of them are funny." Which isn't fair, I'm sure Bob could make me laugh and probably Ayoade. I liked the girl with the posh name too. But half the time people laughed it was because of Lou Sanders and I'm pretty sure I'd be immune to that.

Why was Roisin Conaty even there? Did Jimmy just request someone be there to laugh at his jokes?

Series 2 line-up looks better.
 
I watched the first Canadian series and it came down to Tom Green and Colin Mochrie. Both geniuses, legends at the craft. It had to be so hard not to laugh at each other's schtick.
 
The biggest issue with the show is that there is a lot of times the attempts at comedy are either weak or completely misguided (read: entirely unfunny) and then suddenly the format of the show flips and the fact nobody is allowed to laugh becomes a small mercy. Quite a lot of awkward moments.

I still liked it though. There were no contestants that actively rubbed me the wrong way. I really like Daisy May Cooper because This Country (the show she starred in and wrote) is a masterpiece in my opinion. I absolutely loved it to the point I've watched it multiple times, so she has a lot of cache with me. I liked the new girl too. Obvious Bob and Ayoade go without saying. No problem with Rob, Joe, Joe and Judi. Sara felt she was just padding out the numbers. Lou is probably the closest to being slightly grating to my sensibilities but it wasn't a big deal.

As I said, lightest of light entertainment choices for me.

I also was very confused what Roisin actually brought to the show. Easiest paycheck ever. I mean, if you want someone to bounce off Jimmy just wait 10 minutes for the first person to be out lol.

This is really nitpicky and silly to even notice in a show like this but I felt the ending was a bit "made for tv" so to speak. The line that Bob got him on with his mum being in arms dealing in SWORDS felt genuine but then they came down to the last 5 minutes to decide it and It seemed a bit manufactured from that point.

IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER.

Series 2 has all the same issues but seems a bit stronger so far overall.

I think there was a general feeling that Ayoade maybe threw the game at the end out of respect for Bob.

What would they do if nobody laughed for all six hours? Or if they still had four people remaining at the end? It is a bit contrived!

A thing you (actually, probably more me) need to remember though is that they're trying to make each other laugh in a specific situation. They're not doing material for the audience watching on tv. So someone looking at someone else a bit funny might make the person laugh in the moment but not nercessarily be funny to the viewer. It's about the psychology of laughter.

Commonwealth, and related to the subject... Tom Green killed Mae Martin with a phrase as simple as "Delicious Cheese Sandwich"

 
First three episodes on Amazon, 4th drops tomorrow, very funny so far, even if I am not familiar with a few of this years comedians.
 
Moved the posts on the topic from the British Comedy thread to this thread and edited to the title to actual name of the show ("where no man...where no ONE has gone before.")

David doing the cockney song and dance routine made me laugh because it was unexpected.
 
I've enjoyed both series but haven't exactly been bursting out in laughter watching it myself, but Romesh' Joker was the first one that got me proper. Alan Carr reading his insult to him got me good.
 
They are definitley playing fast and loose with the rules because so many of them have managed to get so far now. Amy Gledhill got her red card for a slight smile with teeth but if we're being pedantic (It's me lol) then loads of them could have been out for the same. Mel especially. You can see that they get stricter as the game goes on because it kind of hinges on a time limit that is not that well thought out.

Yeah, they don't stick to the "if you see teeth it's a smile" thing AT ALL...except when they do. RULES ARE IMPORTANT FOR STRUCTURED FUN.
 
I thought it was a bit weird the black lady had to leave after she went out, sorry I am not good with names.
 
(I'm behind on it and don't feel the pressing need to catch up.)

Alan Carr's been probably the funniest so far, surprisingly(?) First The Traitros now this! I did laugh at Bob's song ("I'll kill again this time in middlesbrough...")
