Maude

Friday

Bazinga!
I loved this show, and it probably had a hand in shaping my young ideals. It was an edgy, political sitcom, along the All in the Family vein. The show introduced issues that were new to me (abortion, feminism, civil rights), thereby encouraging my emerging political identity.

Man, I wish they'd re-run it.

TV Land has been. I catch All in the Family almost every night.

Man Adrian Barbeau had some big tits back then. :D

Not All in the Family...Maude.

Has TV Land been running it?

I know which one you were talking about. :P

And yes. I saw an episode late night the other night.

Ahh...here ya go. :D

Lady Godiva was a freedom rider
She didnt' care if the whole world looked.
Joan of Arc with the Lord to guide her
She was a sister who really cooked.

Isadora was the first bra burner
Ain't you glad she showed up? (Oh yeah)
And when the country was falling apart
Betsy Ross got it all sewed up.

And then there's Maude.
And then there's Maude.
And then there's Maude.
And then there's Maude.
And then there's Maude.
And then there's Maude.
And then there's....

Compromisin', enterprisin', anything but tranquilizin',
Right on Maude.

Yeah, it's amazing how well leftist ideas work when the plot is scripted to insure that they do.

Poor humans don't know whether they're wakin' or dreamin'.

People, people, people.....

Maude was not leftist, she was liberal. And the issues covered on the show were fair to both sides.

I thought it was extremely daring, for example, that Maude decided to have an abortion. You just didn't see that anywhere on TV in those days. Both the pros and cons were discussed, and it wasn't portrayed as an easy decision.

When Maude decided to run for Senate, her husband threatened to leave her if she did. She let him leave. Seeing such a strong woman in action really impressed me, even at my young age.

Romantic it wasn't. Number Six, the show was a comedy. In that genre, practically everything works.

Sarek, I don't think Amanda would approve. But then, your observation was logical.

Love Bea Arthur, hated Maude.

Where have you been hiding, Laker Girl?

She's been arguing with me. :P

All this talk of "Maude" and the abortion episode has brought to mind an unpleasant picture of Bea Arthur and Bill Macy bumping uglies. Didn't need that.

^Why do you think I keep repeating "Man Adrian Barbeau had some big tits back then. :D"

Offsets the mental image of Bea Arthur. Well, it did anyways. :P

I can get on board with that.

*closes eyes*
