David Thomas, leader of legendary Cleveland art-punk band Pere Ubu, dead at 71
CLEVELAND, Ohio – David Thomas, the lead singer of influential art-punk “avant garage” band Pere Ubu, has died. He was 71.
Thomas died in his hometown of Brighton and Hove, England on Wednesday after a protracted illness. The band shared the news on the Pere Ubu Facebook page, adding that Thomas had “several projects in the works,” which the band will complete.
“David Thomas and his band have been recording a new album. He knew it was to be his last. We will endeavour to continue with mixing and finalising the new album so that his last music is available to all,” the Thursday morning post read.
“Aside from that, he left instruction that the work should continue to catalog all the tapes from live shows via the official bandcamp page,” it continued.
“His autobiography was nearly completed and we will finish that for him. Pere Ubu’s Patreon will continue as a community, run by communex.”
