The owners of an apartment in the central Latvian town of Smiltene escaped unscathed when lightning struck their home, but their dining table fared far worse, according to a Thursday report.
 
The Latvian daily Latvijas Avize quoted the couple as saying they "froze in fear" after an earsplitting explosion in their apartment during a violent summer thunderstorm.
 
"We started to look around and then noticed that the glass surface of a table in the kitchen had been blown up," Latvijas Avize quoted the woman as saying.
 
"The specially made table surface was floating in the air in the form of dust," she said, adding there was no smell of burning and that electric kitchen appliances remained intact.
