Coach Todd Bowles: Tom Brady away from Tampa Bay Buccaneers to 'deal with some personal things'

Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady will be away from the team for a period of time to "deal with some personal things," coach Todd Bowles said Thursday. Bowles said Brady's absence was discussed in advance and that he will return after next week's preseason game against the Tennessee Titans on Aug. 20. Brady had excused absences Aug. 3 -- his previously scheduled off day and also his 45th birthday -- and last Friday. The Buccaneers as a team were off last Thursday.

UFC president Dana White says he helped broker deal for Tom Brady to play for Las Vegas Raiders in 2020, but Jon Gruden nixed it

UFC president Dana White said he helped broker a deal for quarterback Tom Brady to play for the Las Vegas Raiders when Brady was a free agent quarterback in 2020, but then-Raiders coach Jon Gruden nullified the deal at the last minute. White was convinced to tell the story by Rob Gronkowski during the UFC with the Gronks broadcast on ESPN and ESPN+ for UFC 278 on Saturday night. Gruden resigned from the Raiders in October 2021. ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported in 2020 -- when Brady was a free agent -- that the Raiders planned to pursue Brady if he reached free agency. He did, but he ultimately signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he won the Super Bowl that season.

The 2017 Heisman Trophy winner struggled to a 6-8 record last season with 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while dealing with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder.

Tom Brady returns to Tampa Bay Buccaneers after 11-day break from training camp
The seven-time Super Bowl champion didn't address the media after practicing. Teammates and coach Todd Bowles said the 45-year-old quarterback was sharp throwing the ball and essentially picked up where he left off when he left the team on Aug. 11.

Buffalo Bills trade OL Cody Ford to Arizona Cardinals for 2023 fifth-round pick
After playing right tackle in 15 games his rookie year, Ford played only guard the past two seasons. He spent 2020 at both guard spots, playing a combined seven games and suffering a season-ending knee injury. Last season, he played only right guard, appearing in 15 games, starting seven.

Dallas Cowboys Tyron Smith facing surgery for torn hamstring, possibly December return, sources say
The loss of Smith, an eight-time Pro Bowler and protector of Dak Ptescott's blind side, creates a gaping hole on an offensive line that was already dealing with questions before the Sept. 11 opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Dallas Cowboys Jerry Jones says Michael Gallup will break camp with team, want start team on PUP
Gallup currently is on the active/physically unable to perform list, and if the Cowboys move him to reserve/PUP at the final cuts next week, he would be forced to miss the first four games.

Scott V. Spina Jr. sentenced to three years in prison for Tom Brady Super Bowl ring fraud

A New Jersey man who posed as a former New England Patriots player in order to buy and sell Super Bowl rings that he claimed were gifts to Tom Brady's family was sentenced Monday to three years in federal prison. Scott V. Spina Jr., 25, of Roseland was sentenced by a judge in Southern California's Orange County. In 2017, Spina bought a Patriots 2016 Super Bowl championship ring from a New England player who then left the team. Prosecutors said Spina paid the player -- identified only as T.J. -- with at least one bad check and sold the ring for $63,000 to an Orange County broker of championship rings. Spina pleaded guilty on Feb. 1. to one count of mail fraud, three counts of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft for posing as the former Patriots player, falsely telling the broker that the family rings were ordered by Brady and defrauding him in connection with three wire transfers for the deposit.

Baltimore Ravens, QB Lamar Jackson fail to reach agreement on new contract

Lamar Jackson turned down the Baltimore Ravens' offers for a contract extension and is now betting on himself this season. On Friday morning, the Ravens announced they were unable to come to an agreement on a new deal by the quarterback's self-imposed deadline. Jackson, who is one of the few players in the NFL representing himself, had said he wanted to suspend talks before the start of the regular season. On Wednesday, he indicated that Friday would be the cutoff.
Jackson, 25, will make $23.016 million in his fifth-year option but has no guaranteed money after this season. Over the past six months, three quarterbacks have signed deals that have exceeded $165 million in guaranteed money. Jackson, who has taken more hits (737) than any other quarterback since 2018, was asked this week whether he feels it's a risk to play with no guaranteed money beyond this season.
