UFC president Dana White said he helped broker a deal for quarterback Tom Brady to play for the Las Vegas Raiders when Brady was a free agent quarterback in 2020, but then-Raiders coach Jon Gruden nullified the deal at the last minute. White was convinced to tell the story by Rob Gronkowski during the UFC with the Gronks broadcast on ESPN and ESPN+ for UFC 278 on Saturday night. Gruden resigned from the Raiders in October 2021. ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported in 2020 -- when Brady was a free agent -- that the Raiders planned to pursue Brady if he reached free agency. He did, but he ultimately signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he won the Super Bowl that season.

A New Jersey man who posed as a former New England Patriots player in order to buy and sell Super Bowl rings that he claimed were gifts to Tom Brady's family was sentenced Monday to three years in federal prison. Scott V. Spina Jr., 25, of Roseland was sentenced by a judge in Southern California's Orange County. Prosecutors said Spina paid the player -- identified only as T.J. -- with at least one bad check and sold the ring for $63,000 to an Orange County broker of championship rings. Spina pleaded guilty on Feb. 1. to one count of mail fraud, three counts of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft for posing as the former Patriots player, falsely telling the broker that the family rings were ordered by Brady and defrauding him in connection with three wire transfers for the deposit.

Lamar Jackson turned down the Baltimore Ravens' offers for a contract extension and is now betting on himself this season. On Friday morning, the Ravens announced they were unable to come to an agreement on a new deal by the quarterback's self-imposed deadline. Jackson, who is one of the few players in the NFL representing himself, had said he wanted to suspend talks before the start of the regular season. On Wednesday, he indicated that Friday would be the cutoff.
Jackson, 25, will make $23.016 million in his fifth-year option but has no guaranteed money after this season. Over the past six months, three quarterbacks have signed deals that have exceeded $165 million in guaranteed money. Jackson, who has taken more hits (737) than any other quarterback since 2018, was asked this week whether he feels it's a risk to play with no guaranteed money beyond this season.
