Lin Yu-ting into gold medal featherweight bout amid gender dispute

Boxer Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan has advanced to the gold medal bout in the women's featherweight division, winning her third consecutive bout while dealing with widespread scrutiny regarding misconceptions about her gender at the Paris Olympics. Lin defeated Esra Yildiz Kahraman of Turkey 5-0 on Wednesday night. Lin will fight for gold Saturday. Lin, 28, is a veteran amateur boxer who won world championships in 2018 and 2022 during a solid decade at the top level of the sport. She is usually taller and more slender than her opponents, winning her bouts through solid technique and savvy use of her reach rather than power.

Lin Yu-ting joins Imane Khelif with Olympic gold amid gender dispute

Boxer Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan won a gold medal in the women's featherweight division at the Paris Olympics on Saturday night, following Imane Khelif's lead a day earlier with a glittering response to the intense scrutiny faced by both fighters inside the ring and around the world over misconceptions about their womanhood. Lin beat Julia Szeremeta of Poland 5:0 in the final at Roland Garros, capping her four-fight unbeaten run through Paris by ensuring that Taiwan's first Olympic boxing medal is golden.

On Friday, Khelif won Algeria's first women's boxing medal with a decisive victory in her own final, beating Yang Liu of China. Both fighters persevered through an avalanche of criticism and uninformed speculation about their sex during the Paris tournament to deliver the best performances of their boxing careers. Lin won all four of her bouts 5:0, even if she didn't win every round on every judge's card as Khelif did.

World leaders, celebrities and millions of online critics either questioned both boxers' eligibility to be in women's competitions or falsely claimed they were men, forcing both women to take unwanted starring roles in a debate over changing attitudes toward gender identity and safety regulation in sports. Both fighters were disqualified last year from the world championships organized by the International Boxing Association, a Russian-dominated governing body that has been banished from the Olympics since 2019.

Team USA wins fifth straight men's basketball gold medal

The American basketball muscle remains strong. The world has made big strides over the past three decades and there are brilliant talents and developing teams that show great promise. But when Team USA sends its best no one yet has shown they can stop the Yanks. It is now five straight Olympic golds for the USA after a hard-fought 98-87 victory over the resilient and prideful host nation of France on Saturday.

While Curry was the hero, LeBron James named Olympics MVP after scoring 14 points with six rebounds and 10 assists. It added to his 4 NBA MVPs, 4 Finals MVPs, 3 NBA All-Star Game MVPs and the only In-Season Tournament championship in history. James averaged 14.2 points, 6.8 rebounds and 8.5 assists on 66% shooting in the Olympics.

James earned his third career gold and fourth Olympic medal overall, joining Durant as the only American male with four. Kevin Durant, who became the first American male to win four golds, had 15 points and several big baskets. Devin Booker, who has been an unsung hero throughout the summer, had 15 points as he locked in his second gold. Booker had a plus-18 plus/minus for the game and was plus-76 in the Olympics. Anthony Davis had one of the best games with 8 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks, and also took him his second gold.

Imane Khelif files complaint due to abuse over gender at Paris Olympics
Fans have embraced Khelif in Paris even as she faced an extraordinary amount of scrutiny from world leaders, major celebrities and others who have questioned her eligibility or falsely claimed she was a man. It has thrust her into a larger divide over changing attitudes toward gender identity and regulations in sports.

**********
It stems from the Russian-dominated International Boxing Association's decision to disqualify Khelif and fellow two-time Olympian Li Yu-ting of Taiwan from last year's world championships, claiming both failed an eligibility test for women's competition that IBA officials have declined to answer basic questions about.

Diana Taurasi wins basketball record 6th Olympic gold medal

Diana Taurasi stands alone in Olympic basketball lore. She is the first player to win six gold medals. The 42-year-old American was part of the U.S. women's team that beat France 67-66 on Sunday for Taurasi's sixth gold, breaking a tie with longtime American teammate Sue Bird for most in Olympic basketball history. Unlike the previous five Olympics she has been a part of, Taurasi wasn't a major factor on the court in this one as the U.S. won its eighth consecutive gold medal. She didn't play in the title game. Taurasi still provided valuable experience off the court for the Americans, who now have won 61 straight Olympic contests dating back to the 1992 Barcelona Games.

Brittney Griner cherishes 3rd gold in aftermath of Russia arrest

When the American flag rose to the ceiling and "The Star-Spangled Banner" started playing at Bercy Arena on Sunday,Brittney Griner's eyes filled with tears. The 67-66 victory over France marked Griner's third gold medal ceremony, as she was also a part of Team USA's victories in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and Tokyo in 2021. But this time hit her differently after she went through the ordeal of being imprisoned in Russia in 2022. Griner was freed via a prisoner exchange in December 2022 after 10 months of captivity. Her time this summer in England, where the U.S. played an exhibition game, and nearly three weeks in France marked her first trip overseas since her release. Griner had four points and two rebounds in the victory over France.

Paris closes out 2024 Olympics with final star-studded show

Setting out to prove that topping Paris isn't mission impossible, Los Angeles rolled out a skydiving Tom Cruise, Grammy winner Billie Eilish and other stars on Sunday as it took over Olympic hosting duties from the French capital, which closed out its 2024 Games just as they started -- with joy and panache. Capping more than two extraordinary weeks of Olympic sports and emotion, Paris' boisterous, star-studded closing ceremony in France's national stadium mixed unbridled celebration with a somber call for peace from International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach.

Following in Paris' footsteps in 2028 promises to be a challenge: It made spectacular use of its cityscape for its first Games in 100 years, with the Eiffel Tower and other iconic monuments becoming Olympic stars in their own right as they served as backdrops and venues for medal-winning feats. But the City of Angels, like the City of Light, showed that it, too, holds some aces.

Back in France, the joy and celebrations that swept Paris during the Games as Marchand and other French athletes racked up 64 medals -- 16 of them gold -- marked a major watershed in the city's recovery from a terrorist attack in and around the city nearly nine years ago. The national stadium, France's largest, was one of the targets of Islamic State gunmen and suicide bombers who killed 130 people on Nov. 13, 2015 Paris became a party again and France found itself. Now, the lights are out. But the memories of Paris' special summer won't dim anytime soon.

Next stop: Los Angeles in 2028.

It’s been eight years since the 2016 Rio Olympic Games took place in Brazil. But for a Wrightsville Beach woman, the experience continues to provide joy for her and others. U.S. wins medal count, ties China for most gold with 40

The U.S. women's basketball team held off France on Sunday to win gold in the final event of the Paris Olympics, and that hardware was needed for the Americans to tie China for the most gold medals with 40. The U.S. easily won the total medal count with 126. Aside from the 40 gold, the Americans won 42 silver and 44 bronze. The U.S. lost a bronze medal Sunday when the International Olympic Committee said it was reallocating the bronze given to Jordan Chiles in the women's floor final to Romanian Ana Barbosu. U.S. Olympic officials are appealing. China came in second in the total medal race with 91, winning 27 silver and 24 bronze. Japan was a distant third with 20 gold medals, 45 overall. Great Britain won 65 medals, but only 14 were gold for an overall ranking of seventh.

The last time the U.S. didn't top the standings in gold medals was at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, when the Americans finished second to China, 48-36. The U.S. has won the most overall medals in eight consecutive Summer Games. The last time the Americans failed to top the medal leaderboard was the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. The "Unified Team" featuring athletes from ex-Soviet republics won both the most golds (45) and total medals (112), while the Americans were second in both categories with 37 golds and 108 medals. Three years ago at the Tokyo Olympics, the U.S. beat China with 39 gold medals to 38. The U.S. won 113 overall medals in Tokyo. The Americans were far more dominant at the Rio Olympics in 2016, when they won 46 gold medals to 27 for Great Britain and 26 for China.

Olympic flag arrives in Los Angeles ahead of 2028 Games

The Olympic flag arrived on Monday in Los Angeles, where it will be flown in 2028 when the city hosts the next Summer Games. The flag arrived aboard a Delta Airlines jet carrying American athletes and officials, and painted with "LA28" and palm trees on its side. Hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur's "California Love" blasted on loudspeakers on the tarmac at Los Angeles International Airport as the plane came to a stop. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stepped off the plane dressed in a red tracksuit, smiled broadly and waved the Olympic flag before descending airstairs to be greeted by California Governor Gavin Newsom. Olympic diver Delaney Schnell, skateboarder Tate Carew and others accompanied the mayor. The International Olympic Committee awarded Los Angeles the right in 2017 to host the 2028 Games. It will be the third time LA has hosted the Games in the modern era, after being the host city in 1932 and 1984. Olympic officials in Paris handed the flag to their American counterparts on Sunday during the closing ceremony. Actor Tom Cruise provided a dose of Hollywood flare in Paris, as he rappelled from the roof of France's national stadium to receive the flag.

Topps unveils rare LeBron, Curry, Durant-signed Paris Olympics card

As rare as it was for LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant to team up for a handful of games this summer, now there is a collectable commemorating their time together at the Paris Olympics that's even rarer. James, Curry and Durant will all autograph a 1-of-1 Topps trading card featuring the gold-medal-winning trio in their red, white and blue Team USA uniforms that will be sent to a customer at random who purchases the stars' base card from the company.

The base card was made available at 6:20 p.m. ET on Saturday -- shortly after the U.S. men's basketball team's gold medal ceremony following its 98-87 win over France -- and the purchasing window will close Tuesday at 6:20 p.m. ET, at which point Topps will pair a redemption card for the triple-auto at random for a lucky customer. The redemption card will be sent to the winner within 10 days of the close of the sale, according to a Topps spokesperson. The base card featuring James, Curry and Durant retails for $11.99.

Topps Now was initiated by the company in 2016. The program also released several other cards during Team USA's run through the Paris Games, including one depicting Curry's 36-point outburst in the semifinals against Serbia; one honoring Durant becoming the all-time leading scorer in U.S. Olympic basketball history; and one of James and tennis star Coco Gauff serving as America's flag-bearers during the opening ceremony.

Arbitration panel won't reconsider decision on Chiles' medal

USA Gymnastics officials say an arbitration panel won't reconsider a decision asking gymnast Jordan Chiles to return the bronze medal she was awarded in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics. USA Gymnastics says it will continue efforts to let Chiles keep the medal.

Late Monday, rapper Flavor Flav -- who has been a prominent celebrity supporter of 2024 Olympians, including discus thrower Veronica Fraley -- posted on the social media platform X that he had made a bedazzled bronze medal for Chiles as a potential replacement while the U.S. fights "the Powers that be." The replacement is in the manner of a clock, which the rapper has worn for decades, since his days with the group Public Enemy.
