PARIS 2024 SUMMER OLYMPICS

Giannis, Greece open with rout; Slovenia's Olympic bid still alive

Giannis Antetokounmpo looked like a player intent on leading Greece to its first Olympic berth since 2008. Antetokounmpo had 32 points in 19 minutes, going 11-of-11 from the field, as Greece rolled to a 109-82 win over the Dominican Republic on Wednesday in Group B of the Piraeus, Greece, Olympic qualifying tournament. Thomas Walkup added 17 points for Greece, which led by as many as 27 and can advance to the semifinal round of the tournament with a victory over Egypt on Thursday. An appearance in the Olympics is one of the few things Antetokounmpo has yet to accomplish in his basketball career.

Sources: Eight NBA stars in final Boomers' Paris squad

The Australian Boomers team for the 2024 Paris Olympics has been finalised, sources told ESPN, with surprising omissions paving the way for some fresh faces. The 12-man team will once again be guided by its NBA talent, with Josh Giddey, Josh Green, Danté Exum, Jock Landale, Duop Reath, Dyson Daniels, Patty Mills, and Joe Ingles all included. A pair of newcomers will enter the fold, with Jack McVeigh and Will Magnay - both members of the NBL Championship winning Tasmania JackJumpers - also named to the team and set to play in their first Olympics. Matthew Dellavedova and Nick Kay - who were members of the bronze medal winning Boomers squad from the Tokyo Olympics - round out the team that will fly to Abu Dhabi next week for more exhibition games, before continuing on to Paris. The final team still needs to be ratified by the Australian Olympic Committee, with an official announcement scheduled for Sunday.

Paris Olympics sets up backup site for marathon swimming

The Olympic marathon swimming event could take place just outside Paris should the River Seine not be suitable for competition, organizers said Friday. "The rules of World Triathlon allow, as a final resort, for the competition to be held in a duathlon format. On the other hand, in order to guarantee that marathon swimming events could still be held if all other contingency plans were exhausted, we have initiated a fallback plan based on the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium," a Paris 2024 spokesperson told Reuters. "The competition site, already used for rowing and canoeing events, has all the necessary features to host these events if required."

Greece eliminates Slovenia, Luka Doncic from Olympic contention

An Olympics berth has eluded Giannis Antetokounmpo so far during his basketball career. He is one victory away from changing that. Thomas Walkup had 19 points, Antetokounmpo added 13 points in 21 minutes, and Greece moved one victory from the Paris Games, eliminating Luka Doncic and Slovenia 96-68 on Saturday from the semifinals of the Olympic qualifying tournament. Vasileios Toliopoulos added 14 points for Greece, which will meet the winner of the Dominican Republic and Croatia on Sunday in the final of the Greece tournament, with the Paris Olympics berth going to the winner.

Doncic finished with 21 points in the game in Piraeus, Greece, which marked first time the two NBA megastars faced each other while representing their senior national teams. Doncic, who played through injuries in the NBA Finals for the Dallas Mavericks in their five-game loss to the Boston Celtics, averaged 31 points in Slovenia's first two qualifying games. But he came out flat Saturday against Greece's big front line.

Suni Lee, Shilese Jones and the making of the most competitive U.S. Olympic gymnastics team ever

Two-time world champion Shilese Jones, 21, cuts a striking image in a red, white and blue leotard as she stretches near the floor on the far side of the arena. The tape on her right shoulder, visible beneath sparkling sleeves, is a reminder of an injury she has battled for two years. When she was 12, Jones' parents moved her family across the country to support her dream of being an Olympian. Nearly a decade later, this is her final shot at fulfilling that dream.

These women, along with 11 others who are competing for five spots, came to this moment from different paths, but their individual stories highlight the collective cultural change that has transformed American gymnastics over the past decade. These 15 gymnasts comprise a historic group: four Olympians, two Olympic all-around gold medalists, multiple world and NCAA champions, and a handful of hopefuls who came of Olympic age in the three years since Tokyo.

In a sport that has long been overwhelmingly white, the 2024 Olympic team has the potential to be composed predominantly of women of color. It is also likely to be the oldest in history, much of the team able to celebrate hearing their names called by ordering a drink at the hotel bar. Seven-time Olympic medalist Simone Biles is the favorite to win the meet and earn the only automatic nomination to the team.

Mihailovic, Robinson, Zimmerman in U.S. Olympic men's soccer team
The men's Olympic soccer tournament is restricted to players under the age of 23, but it does allow for three "overage" players. Mihailovic, Robinson and Zimmerman will fill each of those spots. The remainder of the roster comprises players born on or after Jan. 1, 2001. This summer's tournament in Paris marks the first time that the U.S. men have qualified for the Olympics since 2008.

Vice President Kamala Harris was a surprise guest at the U.S. Olympic men's basketball team's practice Tuesday, and her message was clear. "Bring back the gold," Harris said. Harris -- who flew to Las Vegas on Tuesday for campaign appearances -- addressed the team briefly at the end of its fourth and final training camp practice session. She has long said that she's a Golden State Warrior fan; the U.S. team is coached by the Warriors' Steve Kerr and includes Warriors guard Stephen Curry. "Our nation is cheering you on and we are so proud of you," Harris said. "Beat Canada and bring back that gold." The U.S. men's team plays its first of five pre-Olympic exhibition games Wednsday against Canada in Las Vegas. Even though that game won't have any bearing on the Olympics -- the first U.S. game in France is against Serbia on July 28 -- Harris encouraged the team to go ahead and start winning now.

Kevin Durant (calf) out for Team USA's friendly vs. Canada
Durant won't be part of the exhibition opener against Team Canada, however, in what is the first game between the two teams since Canada beat Team USA in the bronze medal game of last year's FIBA World Cup.

Durant, who will turn 36 in September, has dealt with a host of leg injuries over the past few years, missing the entire 2019-20 season with a torn right Achilles he suffered in the 2019 NBA Finals and then playing totals of 35, 55 and 47 games over the next three seasons.

Shericka Jackson suffers apparent injury in race ahead of Olympics
World 200-meter champion and Olympic favorite Shericka Jackson pulled up with an apparent injury late in a race Tuesday as part of the Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix. The Jamaican standout was in front and nearing the finish line when she suddenly shut it down. Jackson appeared to be in discomfort as she walked off the track in a race won by Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia. The Paris Games start later this month.

Jackson is responsible for three of the four fastest times ever run in the women's 200. Her top time of 21.41 seconds was set on her way to winning gold at worlds last summer in Budapest, Hungary.

Athing Mu not included in relay pool for U.S. track team

About the only real surprise when the U.S. track and field roster came out Tuesday was who didn't make the list: Athing Mu. Although the middle-distance runner didn't qualify at U.S. trials to defend her 800-meter Olympic title, she figured to be under consideration for a spot in the relay pool. Instead, one of the biggest names in track will be left on the sideline for the Paris Games, which start later this month. Mu had been recovering from a torn hamstring leading into trials. Mu missed out on a chance to make the team in the 800 when she got tangled up and tumbled to the track in the final at the U.S. Olympic trials two weeks ago. She wound up finishing last in the race. Mu was a key member of the team's gold-medal win in the 4x400 relay at the Tokyo Olympics. Kawhi Leonard out for Paris Olympics; Derrick White to Team USA

Kawhi Leonard will not play in the upcoming Paris Olympics for Team USA, which has replaced the LA Clippers forward with boston Celtics guard Derrick White. In a statement released Wednesday, USA Basketball implied that Leonard's decision was influenced by the Clippers and Team USA officials after observing training camp in Las Vegas over the past three days. It would have been the first Olympic trip for Leonard, who missed 12 of the Clippers' final 14 games this past season with right knee inflammation. Clippers coach Ty Lue is on the Team USA coaching staff. Representatives from the Clippers, including team president Lawrence Frank, have attended practices at UNLV this week.

Team USA also is dealing with an injury to forward Kevin Durant, who hasn't been able to take part in contact practice due to a calf strain and will not play Wednesday night. Leonard, who is about to start a three-year, $150 million deal with the Clippers, hasn't been able to finish the past two postseasons because of right knee injuries. The two-time NBA champion and six-time All-NBA player has missed 256 regular-season games over the past seven years, including all of the 2021-22 season with knee trouble. He appeared in 68 games this past season for the Clippers, his most since playing in 74 for San Antonio during the 2016-17 season.

Team USA showcases defense, tops Canada in Olympic tuneup

Team USA had plenty of miscues in its first dress rehearsal for the Olympics on Wednesday night. But after a comfortable 86-72 victory over Team Canada in front of a record-setting crowd of 20,756 at T-Mobile Arena, all Anthony Davis was focused on was Team USA's defensive potential. Anthony Edwards led Team USA with 13 points off the bench and Davis had 10 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks as the Americans overcame a cold start to put the game out of reach early in the second half. It also was the first time Curry and James played together on Team USA, after Curry was part of two world-championship-winning teams in 2010 and 2014 and James won gold in the Olympics in 2008 and 2012.

Incoming Duke freshman Cooper Flagg headlines USA Select team

A year from now, incoming Duke freshman Cooper Flagg could be the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, and he's already adding to his résumé. USA Basketball has invited the 17-year-old to practice against Team USA ahead of the Paris Olympics. Flagg was one of 15 players named to the USA Select Team on Friday, a group that will help the national team prepare at a training camp next week in Las Vegas. There's a long history of players from the Select Team eventually joining the national team down the line, including current players Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Haliburton, who served in the role in 2021 before the Tokyo Olympics. Flagg, a 6-foot-9 forward from Newport, Maine, is the first collegian to play for the Select Team since 2013, when then-college stars Doug McDermott of Creighton and Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State were on the squad. The team will be coached by Magic coach Jamahl Mosley.

Kevin Durant again sits out Team USA practice; Kerr unconcerned

Team USA has relocated halfway across the world but is still in a holding pattern with star Kevin Durant, who missed practice again Saturday with a calf strain and likely won't play when the Americans face Australia in a friendly set for Monday. Coach Steve Kerr has been publicly downplaying any concern about the injury but pushed back his timeline before leading the team through practice. "I know there's still a couple of weeks before we have to make a decision roster-wise," Kerr said. "So we're just taking it day by day." If the team has a backup plan for Durant, it is keeping it under wraps. Durant said earlier this week he was hopeful to have recovered enough from the calf injury he suffered two weeks ago to play during the warmup games in the Middle East. It includes a game Wednesday against Serbia, the team the U.S. will open Olympic play against in France later this month.

Russian wrestler turns down offer to go to Paris Olympics

Russia's sole wrestler considering an invitation to compete in the Paris Olympics, Shamil Mamedov, has decided not to attend, Tass news agency quoted the national wrestling federation as saying on Saturday. The federation this week said Mamedov, 23, was free to decide whether to take part. He won a bronze medal at the 2023 world championships.

More than two years after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, facilitated by Moscow's ally Belarus, Russian and Belarusian athletes are being allowed to compete in Paris strictly as neutrals, without flags or anthems. Their participation is subject to additional checks by the IOC that competitors have no connection to the military.

The list of Russian athletes going to Paris has thinned to just over a dozen, with several Russian sports federations refusing to compete in what they see as humiliating conditions.Thirty-six Russians received the green light to compete, but 20 of them subsequently declined to compete, the IOC said.
