Picard looks like a melon playing the flute.

I think the disappointment is entirely in the first few minutes of the episode. After Riker yells "Fire!" -- there's a lot of silence, and then it takes forever for the weapon to come online, and then once it shoots -- it's a cloudy beam of light that does less than nothing. It turned the best TV cliffhanger in years into a wet fart. The rest of the episode was fine, but to start out that way just deflates the old boyo at too crucial a moment.

I don't think they really gave a good reason why Riker didn't want his own ship.
This too. Plus the epsiode ended without Riker saying what he was going to do, and the next week it was back to business as usual without talking about it again.

Well actually the next week was Theodore Bikel saying "I have all the specs and diagrams at home!" a lot.

I don't know, at the time it was an "event" thing, if you know what I mean. A good cliffhanger that left us hanging for 3 months (!) or so before resolution. It did manage to get some friends of mine hooked on the show when they weren't Trek fans before, so there's that. Not that I think Star Trek should be a religious cult or anything nor did I want to be a Jehovah's Witness spreading the word at the time, or now.
