RED arrived!

During my next viewing, which will be later today, I'm just going to follow the story. If my mind's eye picks something up, great. However, I just feel like losing myself in the narrative. After all, isn't that what movies are for?

Too many of my friends have become jaded by the film industry, and are unable to enjoy films anymore. They end up picking apart every last detail of the movie. IMO, something is lost when you do that...the gift of pure escapism.

That's why you should never watch bad movies. When you delve into the details of a film as well-made as Rouge, it's pure appreciation of the beauty of Kieslowski's talent.

Pay attention to the music this time around, too. Notice that the "Bolero" theme that accompanies Valentine and the sort of sad theme that accompanies the Judge are brought together in true Bolero fashion at the end of the film.

And remember that this is what the film is all about:

6, you've made me cry.

Dayum...

I make my students cry when I tell them that, too. I usually show all three, so there's a tremendous emotional build-up over three weeks.

Time for you to order Bleu, methinks.

Not as many as DVDs. Laserdiscs were expensive to begin with, and the Criterions were sometimes close to $100.

Let's see,

Black Orpheus
8 1/2
Arsenic and Old Lace
Hamlet (Olivier)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Looks like that's it. There may have been a couple more at one time, that went into storage when I replaced them with Criterion DVDs.

What about Voyager laserdiscs?

Bob Newhart? No, see, I used to watch that show every Saturday night, along with Carol Burnett, All in the family, and Mary Tyler Moore. I enjoyed my Saturday TV nights, back when sitcoms were good, and variety shows were plentiful. Now that was must see TV.

36 my ass... ;) LOL

I didn't get a laserdisc player until 1993. I'm not sure if Voyager was around at that point. I think it was just Criterion when I started buying. Weren't they the same company or something?

What do you mean by the Bob Newhart remark? And why is my age in question?

I think that Saturday lineup was still in place in 1973 and 1974, when I was four and five. I can remember that I watched those shows, though I can't remember the actual content.

Hmm...I'm not sure. I will find out, tho.

That's where your link goes.

Just funnin' ya. ;)

That's weird. When I linked to it yesterday, it was the URL of the list of Criterions on sale. Now it goes to the Bob Newhart page, and the Criterion sale ad that was at the bottom of the DDD homepage is now an ad for Bob Newhart.

The Criterion sale wasn't supposed to end until the 10th. Curious.

You mean you're not a Newhart fan? :D

No, I enjoy the original Bob Newhart. The one where he owned the hotel in Vermont hasn't aged as well, though. But I did like the last episode of that series, when he wakes up next to Suzanne Pleshette and the whole series was a bad dream.

Listen to the Bob Newhart theme using speakers with good bass response. That bassist gets off.

BTW, guess what arrived in the mail today? The second Red DVD. I feel stupid. The first one just probably took a long time to arrrive, and I jumped the gun.

Now, I could return it, or....

Okay, I've got an answer about the laserdisc thing.

It's a corporate cacophony. Criterion is the label for the collection of movies. Voyager was the company that created it. They simply dissolved the name in deference to the higher recognizability of the Criterion name. Same thing with Janus Films, their theatrical distribution arm. For DVD releases, Criterion became a joint operation of Janus and Home Vision Cinema, which is a division of Image Entertainment.
You wouldn't believe where the quote came from. ;) Along with a request to start chatting again.

Hmm...

Re-reading this thread, I really enjoyed this mini film course.

I plan on doing the same when Blue arrives.

If that's okay with Number_6.

Oh, Preisner's soundtrack is awesome! I plan on ordering it, but neither iTunes nor deepdiscount has it. That leaves Amazon, and I know I have an account with them, but I lost my username and password. I'm going to have to look for them.

You know, in my Itunes collection, I have the complete John Williams collection, Herrmann, Barry, Newman, Courage, Sylvestri, Horner, and Goldsmith, among oodles of others.

But no Preisner.

Meh. My friends are tasteless philistines. ;)

More than okay. I have that film capped, too, so we can look at some frames and then come back to discussing it vis-a-vis Red.

I'll post more thoughts on Red over the weekend. Right now, I need to finish grading some essays that have been sitting around far too long.

Okay, people, are you really going to let me and Number_6 be the brains of TK?

Time to step up to the plate.

It's not too late to order Blue and join the upcoming discussion. 6 bucks at deepdiscount.com. That's only pennies more than a Blockbuster rental, and less than the price of a single movie ticket.

I challenge you. Will you accept? :bigass:
