Red Dwarf: The Promised Land

That does fit best with what we've seen on screen and I guess Red Dwarf isn't the kind of show to go back and tell us why he stopped being an Ace.
 
Rimmer probably just followed red dwarf outside the sensor range until he could come back and never did any Ace stuff
