Canadian air force colonel jailed for sex murders

BELLEVILLE, Ontario (Reuters) – A top Canadian military commander whose obsession with stealing women's underwear escalated into two horrific sex murders was jailed for life on Thursday without possibility of parole for 25 years.

Colonel Russell Williams, who was in charge of Canada's largest air force base and who once flew Queen Elizabeth's plane, had pleaded guilty to killing two women in separate attacks. Police said it was likely he would serve his sentence in solitary confinement.

In a case that appalled Canada, the court heard Williams had videotaped himself raping the women, capturing their pleas for mercy, and then filmed them as they died.

"I stand before you indescribably ashamed... I deeply regret what I have done and the harm I know I have caused to many. I committed despicable crimes," he told the judge tearfully before being sentenced.

A prosecution lawyer described the 47-year-old as "one of the worst offenders in Canadian history". The videos, which were not shown in court, will be destroyed when Williams dies.

The court heard that Williams started off by breaking into homes in eastern Ontario and stealing underwear. He sometimes took photos of himself wearing bras and panties.

Last November he entered the house of Marie-France Comeau, 38, and sexually assaulted her for hours before putting duct tape over her mouth and nose. Comeau, a corporal at the Trenton air base where Williams was commander, suffocated to death.

In January this year he abducted 27-year-old Jessica Lloyd, drove her to his house and then repeatedly raped her. He strangled her to death with a rope and later dumped the body by a rural road.

Williams was arrested in February after a police roadside check discovered the distinctive tire marks outside Lloyd's house had been made by his SUV.

"As long as he dies in jail, I'm happy," Lloyd's brother Andy told reporters outside the court.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said "our thoughts go out to all members of the Canadian Forces ... who have been very badly wounded and betrayed by all of this."

There isn't anything that I don't find disturbing in this story.

But the thing I find MOST disturbing is that he filmed it. Obviously he was going to "re-live the moment". That indicates a complete lack of remorse.

I would have recommended drawing and quartering...
 
What's really bizarre is the massive leap he made in terms of crime. I've heard of escalation, but how the hell do you go from pervy panty thief to multiple murder rapist? Guy's got some serious unhinged stuff going on there. I wouldn't be surprised if they dug up stuff about him nobody knows...yet.
 
well he's away fro 25 years with no chance of parole until then. Alas, we don't have the death penalty.
I feel sorry for the victims & their families but also for his wife - everyone's all: couldn't you tell/ why didnt you know?
 
I always have a strange sympathy/empathy for the families of the serial killer. They're generally just everyday average folks trying to get by, then all of a sudden the rest of their lives are completely screwed just by association to one fucked-up member of the family. If people aren't accusing them of somehow causing the problem through bad parenting or whatever, they're still being accused of somehow knowing what kind of Twisto brother Bobby was and not doing anything about it. In some cases I'm sure that's partly accurate, but in others...they say the number one trait of a true sociopath is the ability to lie without any sense of guilt or qualms, so much so that they can fool lie detectors many times.
 
What a sicko. Canada really should bring back executions, just as we here in the US should go back to more old-fashioned executions. Ya know, guillotines, electric chairs, and public hangings, and air them all on public and cable television.
 
What we need to do is to fully realize the philosophy that the punishment should fit the crime.

If for no other reason that that would make it much more interesting to live here (US).

Imgine the possibilties for pay per view and DVD compilations. YouTube legal channel. Executions on your smart phone.

And the Vegas shows...Oh the Vegas shows.

For that to be true, the women the dude in the OP raped and murdered would have had to be as twisted and evil as he is. They weren't. So no, thirst for the blood of monsters is in no way monstrous.

Thirst for blood is thirst for blood. I'm not saying I don't have it because I do. Righteous is relative. Ethics are situational. Right and wrong are sliding scale.

One man's trash is another man's treasure.
 
To a point. I put it to you that there is no situation in which raping and murdering innocent women is anything other than monstrous. Other cultures? Fuck other cultures. I don't live in other cultures, I live in this one. The one where a man who does what was done in the OP forfeits his life, via the slowest and most cruel method ready to hand.
 
I would like to know who wants that guy living next to them if he gets out of prison in 25 years?
 
well he got 2 life sentences with no chance of parole until 25 years...don't imagine when the 25 years is up he's getting out.

I don't think I said anything about other cultures. I'd like to put this question to you- How would you feel towards the wife of a man who viciously raped and unrepentedly murdered your wife or female child? Would you take the opportunity to rape and murder her to get even with the man who wronged you and destroyed your family? How about if you knew that the law supported you in your quest for your 'pound of flesh'?

I know I would. And when I was done I'd kill his children. Then I'd kill his pets. Then I'd burn his house to the ground.

And if there's someone out there who doesn't like my position, then I'd recommend you don't rape and murder my wife.

Nope, because his wife would be the wrong target. She didn't commit the offense, he did. So he'd be the one to get the vicious 'n' unrepentant repaid directly to him.

I know I would. And when I was done I'd kill his children. Then I'd kill his pets. Then I'd burn his house to the ground.

And if there's someone out there who doesn't like my position, then I'd recommend you don't rape and murder my wife.

But wouldn't the victimization of the rapist/murderer's wife cause him to suffer the exact same excruciating experience you suffered as a result of the brutalization of you wife? Precise eye for an eye as it were?

Shouldn't the punishment fit the crime?

I've been married for 15 yrs.
