Pop culture the last time a Canadian team won the Stanley Cup​


Hockey might be Canada's most popular sport, but the country hasn't had much luck lately when it comes to hoisting the Stanley Cup. It's been over 30 years since the last time a team from north of the border managed to win an NHL title. In the 1992-93 season, the Montreal Canadians, led by Brian Bellows, Patrick Roy and Guy Carbonneau, lost only four playoff games en route to their record-setting 24th Stanley Cup title.

Only six Canadian teams have made the finals since then, and though several have come achingly close, none has been able to bring Lord Stanley's Cup home. Five teams -- the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oliers, Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Maple Leafs are hoping to end that drought in 2024 Stanly Cup playoffs. Lightning coach Jon Cooper apologizes for goalie skirt comment​


Tampa Bay Lightning coach Jon Cooper opened his end-of-season news conference Wednesday apologizing for making what he called an inappropriate analogy about putting skirts on goalies. After the Game 5 loss that eliminated his team from the playoffs on Monday night, Cooper vented about two questionable goaltender interference rulings that contributed to Florida's 6-1 win. The Lightning had two goals disallowed when the NHL situation room deemed a player interfered with Sergel Bobrovsky each time. The league's longest-tenured coach said he was sincerely sorry especially as a father of two daughters who play sports and as a supporter of women's hockey. Tampa Bay has made the playoffs in 10 of his 11 seasons on the job and won the Stanley Cup back to back in 2020 and '21.

Maple Leafs fire coach Sheldon Keefe after first-round exit​


The Toronto Maple Leafs relieved Sheldon Keefe of head-coaching duties Thursday. According to a statement from the club, a search for Keefe's replacement will begin immediately. Keefe has two years remaining on a contract extension Treliving signed him to in August, which doesn't officially kick in until the 2024-25 season. Keefe was promoted to Toronto's head-coaching role in November 2019 to replace the fired Mike Babcock. Keefe had previously been coach of the Leafs' American Hockey League affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, since 2015 and guided them to a Calder Cup championship in 2018. Through 4½ NHL seasons, Keefe led the Leafs to a 212-97-40 record with consecutive seasons of 50 or more wins -- and playoff appearances in each full campaign. Toronto never found postseason success under Keefe, though, bowing out of the first round in three of the past four seasons, including in this year's first-round loss to Boston in Game 7 overtime.

Ranking the Biggest Disappointments of 2024 NHL Playoffs So Far​


The 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs are midway through the second round. So far, there have been plenty of thrills and surprises to keep fans entertained as the field of 16 has been reduced to eight.
Each club began the postseason hopeful of staging a Cup run this spring, but several teams saw those hopes come to a disappointing early conclusion. Some issues, such as poor special teams' play or lack of production, led to clubs with good regular-season records like the Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Maple Leafs getting eliminated. Other teams struggled with inconsistent goaltending or sloppy defensive play.
