As the 2nd half of a 2-parter, I'd give it a 3-but-coulda-been-4-Jammer-stars. As a season finale, it seemed like the rushed finale of a show that wasn't sure it was getting another season.
They figured out and decided on a course of action to fix everything rather quickly/easily, to the point where the EUREKA! drama was missing. (No matter what the problem, it usually comes down to matching the resonating frequency of something, innit.) Suddenly it wasn't an insurmountable task anymore, they just had to do it in time. And they stopped along the way for so many character moments that it no longer even seemed time-sensitive. The absence of building suspense was amplified by the all of Braka's overblown "trial" and the back and forth speechfying with him, Nahla and Caleb's mom.
It had all the pieces of a ripping story, but the balance and pacing just wasn't there.
Here's what they got right: Reno taking charge and commanding these cadets while showing them the lesson in each action simultaneously. All Academy, no bullshit. Get over your teen angst and solve this problem. Tig is the GOAT.
Also, most of the stuff with SAM and the Doctor are gold. If there's a season 2, I just hope they lean a little less on them nearly destabilizing every dang week.
Also, the details of what really happened between Braka/Nahla/Caleb's mom was an interesting twist, even if the effect was muted by it happening in the staged 'trial' with an audience of generic onlookers. I like that there's the possibility for more to explore there. And I'll say it: I like Holly Hunter's new ideas about what a Trek Captain can be. At least, one that's been in her shoes. And then out of them.
As for the other cadets, at this point, I care a little less about all the kids' background traumas and tribbleations. This was the shakedown year. If there's a second season, I hope the ratio is less 90210 and more Academy. They can still have their romances and attitudes and poor-me moments, just don't make them quite so paralyzing. Let them show some coping skills, and maybe have them realize where they are and what they're supposed to be doing.
Also, note to the writers: It's a myth that Klingons are mostly supposed to provide the comic relief. That was part of Worf's trajectory, but that doesn't mean you have to defang every Klingon you introduce.
Also, what happened to Kyle? Does he just sit in his quarters now, waiting for Jay-Den to come home with his pipe and slippers in his hands? Give him more to do.
There's enough here to build a show on. They shouldn't be afraid to keep adding cadet characters, and going with the ones that stick to the wall, kind of like Glee or Degrassi. Toss the ones with dead-end arcs and keep the more interesting ones whose dramas don't stop the show cold.
They can still have those smaller character moments. Just make sure they're as well written and packed with layers as the moments with the adults...
