TV Starfleet Academy - It's Happening

Yeah well, cute as you are, Picardo sort of has to say stuff like that. He wants to keep a steady job.

He won't. The show's done.

‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Series Officially Announced

Preview:

I will watch if there are tits.

I won't be watching any other Trek after Picard. If you want me to give Trek 90210 a chance, I want tits.

Tits and ass.

And no shortage of smooth, muscular pecs, tight abs and firm butt shots for the ladies (AND anyone ELSE who likes man bits - sorry!). I'd even welcome the occasional flaccid penis.

F-bombs and teen angst won't cut it. Let's R18 the shit out of this premise.

I want moistness.

I'm sorry me, two and a half years ago - you did not get your wish. No tits, but plenty of eye candy for man-bit-lovers in the form of the aesthetic Caleb. And while your hopes for Star Trek venturing into flaccid penis territory were dashed, at least we had Ser Arlen of Pennytree's massive dong to tide us over.

I bailed on the show halfway through the pilot so don't know the specifics, but this season finale plot sounds like it wandered in from Discovery, with the writers apparently unable to raise the stakes through anything other than sheer scale. It’s a show about Starfleet Academy, yet they’re already wiring explosives to the entire galaxy?

From the brief moments I observed of the show, the standout performer was the actress portraying Genesis. With filming complete and the series finale approaching, I wish her success in future endeavors and hope upcoming roles will showcase her talents with the benefit of stronger writing.

Well, thanks for bumping the thread for when the new episode comes out later tonight, anyway...

As soon as they mentioned blowing up the mines would kill billions you just know it's not going to happen.

I liked the episode and the yearbook ending.

1.10 - It was a good finale for the season. I mean, I'm sure the technobabble made no sense (and how did the Doctor know how to stabilise Omega?) but they were going for "emotional sense" and it pretty much worked. They paid off most of the character arcs of the season. I liked Reno still using every moment in command to try to teach the cadets something. I still feel like we needed more scenes like this of them actually learning relevant Starfleet skills rather than the prank episode or the Tilly episode.

Braka's stuff felt like a lesser version of the Marco Inaros stuff in The Expanse (they're both psychos but Marco at least has legit points and we get a much better sense of why people would support him.) But it worked fine as a way for Caleb and his mom to come to terms with each other.

Definitely didn't feel like a Discovery finale to me as it didn't have thousands of drone ships flying around confusingly or a city-sized turbolift network.

Was nice to see that the Doctor still has the mobile emitter after all this time.

Still a bit disappointed Lura got nothing in the second half of the season and they weren't really building to anything with her.

I hope Genesis gets a proper story next season and they let Jay-Den's actor use his real voice because he sounds super awkward at times.

I liked it, had lots of ST inspiring words and stuff.

I still haven't seen the last three episodes, but I'll catch up over the weekend maybe. I still don't hate it.

As the 2nd half of a 2-parter, I'd give it a 3-but-coulda-been-4-Jammer-stars. As a season finale, it seemed like the rushed finale of a show that wasn't sure it was getting another season.

They figured out and decided on a course of action to fix everything rather quickly/easily, to the point where the EUREKA! drama was missing. (No matter what the problem, it usually comes down to matching the resonating frequency of something, innit.) Suddenly it wasn't an insurmountable task anymore, they just had to do it in time. And they stopped along the way for so many character moments that it no longer even seemed time-sensitive. The absence of building suspense was amplified by the all of Braka's overblown "trial" and the back and forth speechfying with him, Nahla and Caleb's mom.

It had all the pieces of a ripping story, but the balance and pacing just wasn't there.

Here's what they got right: Reno taking charge and commanding these cadets while showing them the lesson in each action simultaneously. All Academy, no bullshit. Get over your teen angst and solve this problem. Tig is the GOAT.

Also, most of the stuff with SAM and the Doctor are gold. If there's a season 2, I just hope they lean a little less on them nearly destabilizing every dang week.

Also, the details of what really happened between Braka/Nahla/Caleb's mom was an interesting twist, even if the effect was muted by it happening in the staged 'trial' with an audience of generic onlookers. I like that there's the possibility for more to explore there. And I'll say it: I like Holly Hunter's new ideas about what a Trek Captain can be. At least, one that's been in her shoes. And then out of them.

As for the other cadets, at this point, I care a little less about all the kids' background traumas and tribbleations. This was the shakedown year. If there's a second season, I hope the ratio is less 90210 and more Academy. They can still have their romances and attitudes and poor-me moments, just don't make them quite so paralyzing. Let them show some coping skills, and maybe have them realize where they are and what they're supposed to be doing.

Also, note to the writers: It's a myth that Klingons are mostly supposed to provide the comic relief. That was part of Worf's trajectory, but that doesn't mean you have to defang every Klingon you introduce.

Also, what happened to Kyle? Does he just sit in his quarters now, waiting for Jay-Den to come home with his pipe and slippers in his hands? Give him more to do.

There's enough here to build a show on. They shouldn't be afraid to keep adding cadet characters, and going with the ones that stick to the wall, kind of like Glee or Degrassi. Toss the ones with dead-end arcs and keep the more interesting ones whose dramas don't stop the show cold.

They can still have those smaller character moments. Just make sure they're as well written and packed with layers as the moments with the adults...

This was nice... Andy Denhart runs Reality Blurred which only covers reality/documentary TV, but he took time out to throw the show a good word...

Stephen Colbert's announcements remind me of a movie that I can't quite remember. Like some 80s comedy. They don't really go with ST.

Mash?

It's just the Dean's announcements from Community but not as funny.

It could be both! The Dean's announcements could be influenced by MASH. Since Colbert is an old, he probably grew up watching MASH.

Attention. Major Houlihan, your chest x-rays are ready and they really came out beautiful

Stephen Fry does the same thing for school announcements on the show Heartstopper on Netflix.

"GO DO SPORTS!"
