It was pretty good. Some of the dialogue was awkward, like it hadn't been thought out, but the same could be said about TOS sometimes.

4.1 - They kind of skipped the moral dilemma by making it a bootstrap paradox. Pike did feel a bit bad, at least.
La'an punching a dinosaur was funny. I'm pretty sure recessive genes kicking in when you're in your forties isn't a real thing, I guess they'll say augment genes work differently or some shit.
The ending felt like they had money left over on the budget and were like "here's some extra dinosaurs!"
Don't really like the new Vulcan yet. T'Lynn is the only good new Vulcan character from the Paramount+ era.

I really liked that. Not my favorite episode of the lot, but it was interesting despite being really, really out there. Plus, Christina Chong remains gorgeous.

I’m glad I didn’t know the plot ahead of time because the dinosaurs were a very cool reveal. I was worried it was going to be the muppet episode.
When they said we were 65 million years in the past and there was another ship attacking I was expecting the Voth from Voyager. But the actual story was good too. It felt like a TOS episode, with both a slightly predictable plot and some details you just have to ignore in order to go along with the story (they identified the system as Sol but didn’t notice there were was an extra planet? That would so happen in a TOS episode). And I wouldn’t have thought of it if they hadn’t mentioned it, but there was an Edgar Rice Burroughs feel to it too.

Yeah, it doesn’t make any sense. Mars being M class. Earth’s atmosphere being different. No asteroid belt. Extra planet. You’d think there’d be many other systems with more in common than ours.
But maybe it was the stars that confirmed it. After finding no matches in space, Spock decided to rewind the clock until it made sense?

Off the top of my head, Spock probably figured things out once sensors were back on line by looking at Sol and the other planets... Mercury, Neptune, etc., and making the right conclusion.
But in the end, we're talking about a franchise where Chekov fucked up Ceti Alpha V and Ceti Alpha VI. It's all plot device.
Trust me, I've played this game for decades... trying to make sense of the franchise altogether. It's really better to just go with the flow.

I posted this at Turdforge, where ed629 was bombing it... so I'll be lazy and cross post it here:
Filler episode, maybe... but this is the kind of stuff in ST that makes the franchise special to me.
I enjoyed the hell out of it. I saw a lot of range here out of some of the actors, such as Mount. That look on his face, right before...
A thought that kept occurring to me while watching this... it reminded me a lot of the Stanislaw Lem novel Solaris. You all probably saw the shitty Clooney movie made of that novel; no, go read the book itself. This episode reminded me a lot of it... almost as if the ship or something in it was trying to communicate with the trio just like the ocean of Solaris was trying to communicate with the researchers. Probably no real world connection, but the thought came up several times with me.
Two asides:
1. It's interesting that Starfleet has a "Division 12" to get a handle on out of control shit like the Griffin. I don't recall any mention of them before... so this is probably the first mention maybe? If so, this might be an Anton Chekhov "gun is produced" moment.
2. It just occurred to me at the beginning of the episode: no wonder Spock and Kirk get along so well... they're tunnel buddies.

4.2 - Probably the most pure horror episode Trek has ever done? Like there was that TNG episode where Crusher saw all the bodies in the morgue sitting up, and the Voyager where Janeway's creepy Jane Austen holodeck fantasy came to life (actually any episode featuring that was horror) but this had Spock's ears sliced off, Una cutting herself open, Sam's bowels sucked into space, Pike chopping his fingers off and La'an stabbing Kirk. It's a lot!
Halfway through when it became obvious everything was imagined I did begin to wonder if there would actually be a point to it all, but thankfully there was actual character development. Finally a serious story for Spock for once! Logic saves the day! Surely no comedy Vulcan episode this season as he's made the decision to be purely logical from now on. Kirk gets good development too. The only one I'm not sure about is how this experience has changed La'an? Will she be tempted to stab people from now on because it's so much fun? We'll have to wait and see.
One question: how come we (the view) could see Sam floating through space if it was all being imagined by Kirk? Doesn't really make much sense. Then again, we could also see the ghost at the end so I guess whatever was happening on the ship is visible to outsiders, maybe?
