It felt like live action Lower Decks, but I did enjoy it and thought the transporter accident explanation was a reasonable excuse for a very unreasonable event.
After this I don’t know what the rest of the season’s plots are, so I’m hoping for a really rare gimmick like a Star Trek themed episode.
Just watched the noir episode yesterday too and I thought stylistically it looked great, and Kor was a very interesting and well acted character (that could’ve had any other name), but I kept waiting the whole episode for the real reason the resistance leader looked like Una. I do wonder if I worry too much about them"wasting" episodes on comedy episodes when I know there's only ten episodes a season and every Hangover/Puppet episode reduces the chance of them making a classic Star Trek episode. And as always I do think about things too much all the time and maybe I should just FUCKING RELAX.
But also, I still think you can do comedy episodes with more substance or, if you are going to do straight comedy, at least go crazy with it. I feel like the two comedy episodes so far have kind of just stretched one joke to 50 minutes each time and they could actually do so much more. Like imagine if instead of just puppets the episode kept shifting genres all the time (while simultaneously telling a DEEP story about Spock's emotional struggles.)
OR, and this just came to me, why not combine them into one. Like have the Scotty/Ortegas plot play out while, at the same time, the drug planet makes Spock imagine everything at puppets (while still telling the deep emotional story!)
GOD I'M SO GOOD AT WRITING when I just come up with ideas that can be summarised in a sentence or two and aren't actually full episodes.
The puppet episode would have probably been fine if the show had a better pedigree of quality overall. That's the brutal takeaway.
It looks like it was enormous fun to make, getting the Jim Henson people in, etc. The behind-the-scenes stuff looks like everyone is enjoying themselves. But that doesn't mean it translates onto screen. I called this show guilty of writers' room masturbation and I don't think I was wrong. It feels like their experience making the show is more important than what they ultimately produce as a Star Trek series.
The episode feels like it could have been a 20-minute special to promote the ACTUAL show instead of an ACTUAL episode.
Obviously Smile Time from Angel was a big reason they wanted to do this, in the same way they wanted to do the musical episode, to the point of bringing in Jeffrey Bell, who was running Angel at the time of Smile Time, to consult. But the problem with their aping of Once More, with Feeling carries here too. When you break your show in fun and interesting ways for high-concept episodes, it has to be EARNED or it falls flat.
Buffy and Angel earned their respective high-concept episodes. This show hasn't, because gimmicks already make up so much of its identity. When that's your starting point there is nothing left to break. You're just circling the drain.
Was good to see Rachael Harris, but the Orions were not particularly interesting, so she didn't get to do too much. Ethan Peck was again the highlight despite the premise.
It Was All a Dream™ is an escape hatch because even they know that everyone getting turned into puppets because a puppet was on the pad is a bridge too far, but that doesn't mean you had to do it.

Maybe I am more easy going than I used to be, but I have enjoyed every episode so far this season, sure it's very up and down in tone but I am fine with that.
