TV TASKMASTER

It's always a bit jarring when really American Americans talk to British people...

Haflway through series 19 and it's VERY good, possibly one of the best! Jason Mantzoukas is completely insane - you can tell why he always plays similar characters on tv shows and why he's so good at it. But the other four are very good too and have the kind of chemistry that they producers must dream about when they're putting a series together.

Sereis 19 is definitely one of the best. Jason was great fun as said, and managed to do the thing where he would abuse Alex and destroy the set without coming across as an actual bad person. Loved her team with Stevie, they were so good together. Stevie (A GIRL DESPITE HER NAME) was really good too in the "young female comic I haven't heard of" spot. Fatiha's voice took a bit getting used to but she had very funny moments. Matthew was great at the tasks and had one of the funniest moments when his balls fell out. Rosie was completely fine too. Great casting and great series!

On to 20 which is looking good too and I'll make sure to record 21 off tv so I don't have to watch adverts EVER AGAIN.

I need to catch up with the latest series.

Watching Last One Laughing, it did strike me as odd that the stars have never aligned for Ayoade to be on Taskmaster yet. Obviously, Last One Laughing is a days filming and Taskmaster is a bigger time commitment but STILL.

I've been in a lot of waiting rooms the past week or so, so I've had a chance to get through some more Taskmaster I missed the first time around on the ol' phone. AMAZINGLY (well not really) I found out that somehow I totally missed series 6 with Tim Vine, Russell Howard, etc. So I've been watching that. It's pretty good, not an all timer by any stretch but pretty good. I don't know how I skipped it originally. I've obviously seen a lot of series after it.

Is that the one with Alice Levine? That was the first one I watched and mainly because I fancy her. She wasn't the best contestant but it was nice to see her!

HOPE EVERYTHING IS OKAY.

Finished series 6. Very comfy series. Enjoyed it a lot. Started watching Series 7 and I HAVE watched this one but I certainly don't have strong memories of all the tasks and banter so it's a fun watch. Way more goblin energy in this one and very funny backstabbing banter from the comedians. ALL the comedians are good in this and add a lot. Rhod being the standout for chaos but they all add a lot.

I remember Phil Wang doing the same "I haggled..." joke in every episode and it never getting a laugh.

Still haven't finished 20. I like it, but I got distracted rewatching Better Call Saul.

Finally finished 20. Another great series. Maybe not quite as great as 19 as that had ALL TIME cast chemistry, but still great. All five contestants were funny and not annoying. That's what you want! Sanjeev you might think could have been annoying doing the "old guy who can't be bothered" act but I think it clearly was an act and he was enjoying himself a lot. Rhys Shearsmith is incredibly intelligent. Never heard of Phil Ellis before (they're good at finding kind of obscure comics like this who haven't been on tv much, aren't they) but he was hilarious. Maisie Adam was good too (I don't know why I'm listing them all when I already said they were all good.) And Ania Magliano has to be one of my all time favourite contestants. Recency bias and cute girl bias, yeah, but she was great. TOP LEVEL SERIES.

(There's no gifs of her from Taskmaster.)

If you enjoyed that, I think you'll enjoy Armando Ianucci in Series 21. Still have a couple episodes left of that ourselves.

I got the vague sense maybe 21 isn't as good from the few reactions I saw, but I'll find out.

Turned on Hulu today to watch Jeopardy Masters, and found that Series 22 is being streamed on Hulu!! We'll be watching it tonight, will report back if they censor it... if I don't hear a single fuck, then it's back to YouTube!

Not to spoil anything, but Fucknuckle was said at some point.... yeah we're sticking with Hulu for now.

Four or five episode into series 21. It's good. It's not as good as 19 or 20, but those were all time greats in my mind. The cast chemistry isn't quite as magical this time, and while I don't dislike anyone it probably doesn't have a legendary type contestant. But, again, it's good! They've got the formula down and can't really make a bad series.

Amy - Like her on everything I see her on, very warm and genuine. Maybe not someone who is hilariously funny but always good to watch because she comes across so well and it's nice watching nice people doing things.
Armando - In the 90s and 2000s he had an incredible comedy run. Something happened in the last ten years, sadly, and his recent television output hasn't been good. But he's doing pretty good on this! Very much the grumpy old man role but has done some quite creative things on the tasks and comes across well.
Joanna - Look, I admit I'm biased against her because she's so loud. Her accent is so strong. It's not fair to hold those things against her, but I can't help it. I've always found her a bit...performative. Like she's kind of similar to Amy in the type of contestant she is, but Amy comes across completely genuine where's with Joanna...I don't know. She's a bit much. Also feel like she's Greg's favourite and, again, probably unfair but hard to shake that feeling. BUT, I can't pinpoint anything she's done that's actively bad! She's been funny at times and is good at the tasks. I'm going to try to watch her with an open mind.
Joel - In the "kind of bland nice guy" role. Not fair though, as I actually like him. Not going to be anyone's all time favourite or anything but comes across as a real nice guy and has made some funny comments. NO PROBLEM WITH JOEL.
Kumail - The biggest name worldwide they've ever had. Obviously a big fan of the show and he's thrown himself into it. I agreed with him that it was unfair that Joel got 5 points on that one task after breaking the rules. Not as great as Jason Mantzoukas in terms of AMERICANS but I do like him.

So yeah it's fine!
