A young woman, 28 years old, long time friend of my daughter, killed herself Monday, they found her body late yesterday. She'd been suffering with TMJ for several years, and after several unsuccessful surgeries she was left with an addiction to pain killers, depression, psychosis, and debilitating pain. She sat on her living room sofa, put a gun to her head and pulled the trigger. Perhaps suicide is a big joke to some, but some take it very seriously, so much so they end their lives.

I'm sorry to hear that :(

Me, too. I want to remember her this way - young, happy, pretty, smiling ...

because it is very sad to me that was not her reality.

That is sad. :(

Hug someone you love, and hold them tight.
Do not waste your time. We are none of us guaranteed a tomorrow.

Be thankful for the good things in your life. Be happy. :)

This fucking sucks, eloisel, I read this late last night.

I practice Pathwork and in particular I use lecture 181 which is the "Three Voices" meditation. During the prayer cycle, I included her and your family. This kind of thing always is devastating, many blessings to all of you.

Sometimes a certain poster demonstrates the intellectual capacity of a three-minute egg.

I too have known someone young , bright and pretty who only ever saw darkness....like you e., I wish she too could have had a different reality. I'll think of your daughter's friend in my meditations today.

Here is my story of Joanna.

Back when she and my daughter were very young they got into some trouble with the law. My daughter had gotten a ticket for something, hadn't told me about it, didn't pay it so it went into warrant. One night, my daughter and Joanna were out driving over in a tiny town near ours, after curfew, and my daughter made a U-turn where she shouldn't have made one, which gave that tiny town's policeman good reason to stop them. When he discovered my daughter had a warrant, he arrested her and took her to jail. Joanna drove my daughter's car back to my house. I had already gone to bed and was sound asleep. My dogs (the smallest 40 pounds, the largest 180) were sleeping in the hall in front of my bedroom door. I woke up to this tiny little voice calling out from the other end of the hall - "Lezlie's mom." There were other things she could have done but she was 17 and inexperienced. That little slip of a girl braved the dark recesses of my house and my terrifying dogs to get help for her friend.

There is nothing left to do for Joanna but weep. My thoughts and energies are with those who are in that saddest of places where they feel the best they can do for themselves is to end their life. I'm going to include those people who find so little goodness in living that they would wish death on others for no other reason than they've crossed paths on a message board.

I am very sorry to hear this. I thoughts are with her, her family, and everyone who knew her. I hate hearing anything bad happen to anyone, but especially kids. Suicide is a tough thing to prevent. You have to be somewhat insane to do it because the human body uses flight or fight to deal with situations, and I dont know of a single animal that tells itself, "okay, kill yourself" in a particular situation. So she probably wasn't able to make what seems like a logical choice to many of us, but in reality she was making what she thought was the best choice for herself. Some people are born with that trait and see it as a way out and others dont. Kind of like how some people might have choices A, B, C, and D to deal with things while others have E at the end and it unfortunately ends like this. Some people think it is a chicken way out, but most of the time it isn't. The person is really hurting and is beyond handling the situation with the tools he/she has. Even though we all would have liked to help her, she took an unfortunate path for the people that knew her, but she isn't hurting anymore and is with God. I truly believe all who love her will see her again.

I've had to talk two people out of committing suicide and even though both have gone on to live their lives, it still haunts me for some reason. Maybe it is the "what ifs". I rarely pat myself on the back about it because I know some other people who also committed suicide that I didn't know very well, so I had no way of talking to them about it, and wish everytime I think about it that they had.

I dont know what TMJ is though. . . would you mind elaborating on that?

As for the pic, it is juvenile, but we all are here at some point otherwise TK wouldn't exist. We make fun of a lot of things that would suddenly not be funny at all until they are in your face and have to be dealt with.

The TMJ:
"TMJ" stands for TemporoMandibular Joint, or the jaw joint. You have two TMJs, one in front of each ear, connecting the lower jaw bone (the mandible) to the skull. The joints allow movement up and down, side to side, and forward and back—all the mobility necessary for biting, chewing and swallowing food, for speaking and for making facial expressions.

TMJ Diseases/Disorders:
Temporomandibular joint diseases and disorders, commonly called TMJ, are a collection of poorly understood conditions characterized by pain in the jaw and surrounding tissues and limitations in jaw movements. Injury and conditions that routinely affect other joints in the body, such as Arthritis, also affect the temporomandibular joint.

Who is Affected by TMJ Diseases/Disorders:
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) states that over 10 million people in the United States suffer from TMJ problems at any given time. While both men and women experience TMJ problems, the majority of those seeking treatment are women in their childbearing years.

Causes:
Not all causes are known. Some possible causes or contributing factors are injuries to the jaw area, various forms of Arthritis, dental procedures, genetics, hormones, low-level infections, auto-immune diseases, stretching of the jaw as occurs with inserting a breathing tube before surgery, and clenching or grinding of the teeth.

Diagnosis:
Diagnosing TMJ diseases and disorders can be difficult and confusing. For example, facial pain can be a symptom of many conditions, such as sinus or ear infections, decayed or abscessed teeth, various types of headache, and facial neuralgia (nerve-related facial pain).

At present, there is no widely accepted, standard test to correctly identify all TMJ conditions. In most cases, however, a complete evaluation, including a detailed medical history, the patient’s description of symptoms, and physical examination of the head, neck, face and jaw provide information useful for making a diagnosis.

Tests that are recommended are often intended to rule out other possible medical conditions. A diagnosis of TMJ diseases and disorders may be made only after every other possibility has been considered and eliminated. Many TMJ patients see multiple healthcare providers, such as primary care physicians, dentists, sleep specialists, ear, nose and throat specialists, neurologists, endocrinologists, rheumatologists, pain specialists, chiropractors, etc., in their search for answers.

Before undergoing any costly diagnostic test, it is always wise to get an independent opinion from another healthcare provider of your choice and one not associated with your current provider.

Progression of TMJ Diseases and Disorders:
Some TMJ problems improve on their own, without treatment, within weeks or months with simple home therapy. For others, symptoms worsen over time and develop into long-term, persistent and debilitating pain. Most people with TMJ problems have relatively mild or periodic symptoms.

Symptoms:
Pain is the most common symptom. TMJ pain is often described as a dull aching pain in the jaw joint and nearby areas, including the ear, which comes and goes. Some people, however, report no pain, but still have problems using their jaws. Other symptoms can include:
Being unable to open the mouth comfortably
Clicking, popping or grating sounds in the jaw joint
Locking of the jaw when attempting to open the mouth
Headaches
A bite that feels uncomfortable or “offâ€
Neck, shoulder and back pain
Swelling on the side of the face

Additional symptoms may include: ringing in the ears, ear pain, decreased hearing, dizziness and vision problems.

Keep in mind that occasional discomfort in the jaw joint or chewing muscles is common, and is not always a cause for concern. Many people with certain TMJ problems get better without treatment. Often the problem goes away on its own in several weeks to months. However, if the pain is severe and lasts more than a few weeks, see your healthcare provider.

Treatment:
Because most common jaw joint and muscle problems are temporary, lasting only weeks or months, simple care is all that is usually needed to relieve the discomfort. Self-care practices, for example, eating soft foods, applying ice or moist heat, and avoiding extreme jaw movements (such as wide yawning, loud singing, and gum chewing) are useful in easing symptoms.

Unfortunately, treatments are based largely on beliefs that are not grounded in thorough scientific research. As a result, some patients are made worse by these treatments.

TMJ is temporomandibular (jaw) joint disease. It affects the joint where the mandible (the lower jaw) joins the temporal bone of the skull, immediately in front of the ear on each side of your head. A small disc of cartilage separates the bones, much like in the knee joint, so that the mandible may slide easily; each time you chew you move it. But you also move it every time you talk and each time you swallow (every three minutes or so). It is, therefore, one of the most frequently used of all joints of the body and one of the most complex.

For some people it is not so bad and diet and exercises help. For some it is worse and surgery is required. For others, like this young woman, it is very severe and treatments provide little if any relief. In cases such as hers, these people are in so much pain they are bedridden for long periods of time, which causes other physical and mental problems.

I don't have a problem with juvenile but the purpose was cruel and that I do have a problem with. The holidays are the worst time for people who are suicidal.

I'll hold her down, and you can slap her little face til it's bright red :bigass:

I have had bruxism since I've had my four wisdoms out, and regular sinus infections that cause the right side of my head to go deaf and feel like a swollen achy melon, (like today for example) so I know what she went through.

Basically, nothing helps.

Oh, let's give her a pink belly instead then throw her naked out into the snow in front of a psychiatric hospital!
