I want to smell dark matter
Remember how I'd post "BRING BACK THE CRYSTAL MAZE" once a year every year for two years? Well, it actually is coming back tomorrow (but a celebrity special for cancer?)
 
It was nice that they had a Richard O'Brien appearance. The Aztec Zone looked weird and wrong with a ceiling.

Too much talking, but I guess they think we care about the celebrities. I noticed they didn't show all the games in full. Like the clock would be at 3 minutes, it would cut away for a second and it would be two minutes when it came back. Then again who'd want to watch three whole minutes of football man staring at a battery.
 
People on twitter kept complaining that the set looked cheap, but as you probably know it was the crowd funded real life recreation that I went to earlier in the year.

I was glad to see Michelle Keegan fail at the sand bags game, like I did. It wasn't so fun (though I do applaud him) to see an amputee complete the game with the cargo net and the bells in about a minute, when I got locked in.

Most of the other games I didn't recognise.

I couldn't believe how bad Rio was at remembering his team's names. What a crap leader. "Puzzle man", "this guy here", "the Olympian" (even though he's a Paralympian and you'd expect a sportsman to know the difference). Shocking.

Stephen Merchant was pretty good, though. Impressed he actually shaved his head and his jokes were surprisingly edgy. I hope they do it again sometime.
 
He shaved his head for the Wolverine movie.

If they did do a full series they'd need a proper set, but like Merchant said 4 have just spent all their money on that cake show so they'd probably never be able to afford it. The more I think about it the more impressed I am by the original Crystal Maze set from the nineties. It must have been the size of a small town!
 
HEY, new series starts tomorrow...and it's starting with another fucking celebrity special. But at least the new maze looks good.
 
Did they really need to spend about ten minutes on Louis Spence getting picked for a game then talking about him bieng locked in? Richard Ayoade is too ironic for my tastes, but I guess that's what people want out of a host now? Also the maze still looks smaller than it did in the nineties but I guess we're never going to get back to the nineties!

But apart from that it was okay.
 
I probably shouldn't complain about a tv show I enjoyed as a child not being as good 25 years later, right? That's probably the kind of thing that puts people off because they're like "who cares, really?"

But yeah too much talking not enough games.
 
I haven't seen this week's yet, but the second one was really good. It felt like Richard Ayoade had got into the role (of himself, I know, but still...). I think he's really good and depending on how many lines are actually spontaneous then very quick witted.

I like the "you'll look different when you enter the room than you do now. Don't worry, that's just editing", but let's not overuse it.

Joey Essex accidentally proving he's not stupid and is actually very good at this stuff, combined with David Coultard being really agro about losing his first game and having to win the last game to prove himself were both good "journeys".
 
They started showing episodes with regular people at last. It's entertaining but still slower paced than the original series. I miss the franticness of Richard O'Brien.
 
That team were really good. I felt sorry for the mum who failed both of hers and got made fun of for leaving the rooms too early.

Still, Richard Ayoade is a great host. His quips are the highlight of the show for me, especially when the contestants do a room we've seen before.
 
The team captain daughter was cute. Having a family as a team rather than random strangers is a decent idea too.
 
She was quite bolshy and totally flaked out with the riddles. Adam Buxton put his heart and soul into that character!

I preferred Chris, the one with suspiciously dark hair.
 
Yeah, they were a bit more normal and had a token white guy who didn't say anything. I liked how uncomfortable Richard looked when they were celebrating.
