The Daily Show

LOL, well the whole election and everyone involved in it totally piss me off. Talk about Daily Show, holy fuck people, this election was like, you know...rigged, as in stolen. It's not even real, and that fucking jackass is still braying about "being out by June 30th" and "freedom lovers" in Iraq.

"NEWS"??????????//////// You've got to be shitting me.

It makes me want to puke.

I haven’t seen a single person who lives outside of North America say they like The Daily Show. I think its because Europeans don’t see the utter crap which passes for news on American 24hr news networks such as CNN and Fox News.

The Daily Show jumps on that pathetic display of news and satires it. They attack the one line news bites used, the bad reporting, and the black and white thinking used. The show looks bad because it’s supposed to be bad and we get why.

I’d also like to point out that all his interviews are fluff interviews. As much as I’d love to see him as he was on Crossfire he just can’t do that and expect guests. The interview segment tends to be where I tune off because I’m not particularly interested in seeing him play nice with some political retard that deserves a severe bitchslaping.

Also when it really comes down to it The Daily Show won’t be too controversial. Remember the evolution special? They were far too nice.

It's just not close to funny. Not even close. The host is just a smarmy jackass that thinks he is being funny when he is just being an annoying smarmy ass. You can see how they have attempted to deconstruct UK shows like HIGNFY and formulate a success out of it. They are clearly going for a Angus Deyton type of guy with the host but it doesn't pull off, mainly because Angus Deyton is dry and satirical to the very core of his body, and actually funny.

Most of the humor is purile as well. When you are doing political satire you are not looking for purile, you are looking for biting, sharp, dry wit.

I swear I have watched this show tons of times now and it just totally is not funny, EVER. not once I have laughed. Someone get Ian Hislop on the air!

Actually I think John Stewart does suck. I thought Craig Kilborn was awesome though, even before they brought in the live audience. That was many moons ago. The supporting cast isn't as good as in the old days either. But to say we can't do political satire???

GO FUCK YOURSELF!!

The Daily Show is good and I agree with whoever said that folks outside the US are unlikely to get it.

You have to be doused in five years of horrific MSNBC, FOX News and O'Reilly Factor to truly grasp Americans' hatred for our media.

I live in DC and I would say the only legitimate non-Internet media outlets I have access to are the Washington Post and National Public Radio. I have literally not watched television news -- with the exception of CSPAN -- in years.

Only two posts down and he can't remember who posted something :P

^^I take it you're a leftist. Because you've just listed two incredibly biased sources of news.

Why yes, yes I am.

Actually are there any semi-respectable right-wing outlets? Christian Science Monitor is crap and it's the only one that comes to mind.

(I'm not being facetious, mind you. I'm actually asking, just please don't say "Washington Times.")

Oh and Cow you totally have me there... Sorry about that. IT IS COW WHO HAD THE GOOD IDEA TO POINT OUT THAT DAILY SHOW IS VERY MUCH ONLY FOR NORTH AMERICANS. :)

I'm not sure that it's necessarily right-wing, but I look to The Wall Street Journal to balance out the leftist excesses of The Post, the NYT, and NPR.

I like the WSJ, too. I just think that most print media outlets are considered left-biased because there are so few right-wingers on the print side.

And TV reporting is just basically crap any way you slice it, with the exception of Front Line. I know some people find Front Line to be leftist, but it's dead on about the topics of terrorism and national security.

Don't get it? Are you joking? Of course I get it. It's hardly some secret humor only Americans can understand.

I don't know about the previous host, I am simply talking about what I have seen of the Daily Show on CNN. And sorry, but it is simply not funny. It's not that I don't understand all the great jokes about Canada.... *Yawn*

It just isn't funny, there is a difference. THe guy is trying to hard to be sarcastic and the material is third rate. I watched some clip today where they all pretended not to know where Canada is. Yeah, fantastic stuff, top flight entertainment. It simply isn't funny or clever. Fin.

Oh, lookie, ancient picture posting  You're not putting forth a very good argument. Picture insults are sooooo 2001 you peon.

The Americans do plenty of things just fine, I enjoy lots and lots of American programming, comedy or otherwise. Hell, if I want American Political satire I will watch the rare occasion the Simpsons or Family Guy have a stab, since they are funny. The Daily show? Puuhlease, it's bollocks.

Oh don't try and kiss up and compliment us on some of the other shit you seem to think we do right. It is good to see when we break it down to cartoon level you giggle and burp just fine, but then throw your baby food on the floor when someone changes the channel to John Stewart. Let me turn on the BBC and see what's going on. Hey, it's an editorial. Oh he's. . . putting me to fucking sleep. Hey, look at the quality of their sets and especially the film they use. Thought we were all in the digital age by now but I guess you can't expect everyone to have all the basics. "Substance over flash" you say? Wait, let me get 500 cups of coffee before you start.

Oh you score well with Absolutely Fabulous, but I'd watch the Daily Show over Who's Line is it Anyway. OMG I'd risk losing a testical before sitting down to watch an entire episode of that crap again. Hey, try to get someone over there to insert some kind of plot climax into a drama or mystery. I feel like in every murder mystery everyone is sitting around waiting for the bus. Oh, there are no guns in England? So good guys and bad guys have conversations and verbally out-wit each other! Of course!

Even your porn sucks. WTF. How do you screw up porn???

If your shows were so great we'd be watching them. Ironically, you know all about ours because YOU WATCH THEM. That's got to be a little irritating I imagine, to be saturated with our culture and your's is practically non-existant in ours. Well, at we can find it if we look for it hard on cable. Sometimes see a little of it on the history channel. . .

:scared:

Lets go Menty!

That's nice, a little long and defensive... But nice all the same.

Menty, I really don't think you guys get it. Just thinking the Daily Show is on CNN is silly, man. The show MOCKS CNN and one time they let him on CNN, he called the host of that show a fag and made fun of the dude's bowtie. The guy's previous claim to fame is that he was in Half-Baked talking about "have you ever tried skateboarding -- on weed?"

What you don't get is that it's not satirizing politics precisely, it's usually satirizing American media mindlessness whilst riffing on the news.

But who the fuck cares? I'm just responding because you say you get it but I doubt it. The cultural references laced throughout the show -- there is no way you understand them if you are pretty much on the British TV diet. Even the titles of their pieces are mocking Fox News and CNN, especially on the issue of Iraq. And have you seen the Colbert Report? It's a spin off of the Daily Show and it is 100% unfunny unless you have been subjected to hours of Bill O'Reilly, in which case it is pretty hilarious for the pure spoof factor. (*cough* "pay for the members-only section on my website" *cough*)

Not that I even find the Daily Show all that great. I probably haven't watched an episode since last year's election. It's just that I think you're missing the point of the show since you haven't seen the barfable content it is mocking.

Actually Menty you're right the Daily Show is pretty lame.

But we have this thing called the Weekly Show and it is very, very funny but they don't let anybody who is not an American watch it. They test your Americanism by making you drink a Budweiser, and if you can hold it in your mouth for ten seconds without spitting it out they figure you must be an American.

I know and understand Bill O'Reilly jokes just fine since I used to get Fox News, Right Wing anchor, insane and totally unobjective, I get it. CNN is on all the time here since it's the only English speaking news program we have. I "get" it just fine. Not once while watching it have I scratched my head and wondered what that joke was making fun of ect..

I am suprised at the defensive streak displayed in this thread. It really doesn't matter a jot. The show, for me, is not funny. I find it all rather stupid. Yes, we get it, you don't like Canada. Yes, we get it, you're making fun of New Jersey.. Basically it is not funny. I cannot help the fact that I don't find it funny. I cannot help the fact that it reminds me of a poor mans version of HIGNFY.

As for Knowlton's pro America fuck the rest not so mini rant. Well, it's nice that you see that you have something to defend against.

SBV I do not begrude you enjoying the show, and Knowlton I am not "sucking up" by saying I like a lot of American programming, because I do, it's that simple. I just feel that their attempts at satire, from what I have seen of the Daily Show, which is a fair few episodes now, is severley lacking in any sharp wit or comedy. Clearly it must seem like a major breath of fresh air to you on your side of the pond since you have such regulated and fucktarded news broadcasting services. To me I find it weak.

Oh, I know. There is a lot of funny American stuff. Political or otherwise. This thread is aimed square in the jaw of the Daily Show, I sited no other shows. I did say that in my opinion Americans don't usually do very good satire but that is not the absolute 100% closed case. Of course there are a lot of smart and witty Americans who do just fine with satire, hell, some of them are on this board. But I haven't had the opportunity to see much of it. And compared to something like HIGNFY or even Not the Nine O'Clock News, it just falls short.

We also have a number of VERY funny American comedians who frequent HIGNFY in England. Thought I would add that before people start stringing me up as some Anti-American which is absurd.

I wonder why I was defensive about this, I'm not exactly sure. Probably lack of sleep. I think also that it really was a breath of fresh air when it started a few years back (which you mentioned). So many of us really hated (and still hate) American news channels and it made fun of them and we were thankful for that.

Since then it's been mostly downhill and the interviews are mostly boring and meaningless. Also like someone else said, they don't get anywhere near the access to freaks because almost everyone has heard of the show now. Those were GREAT when the show started, interviews with Bigfoot nutjobs and whatnot.

But anyhow, yeah a rant about how our dickweed media companies do a better job programming than your dickweed media companies doesn't really interest me either. If we want to fight, we should fight over whose football is better.

I think American football must be better because of the cheerleaders, who are much hotter than your hooligans, you must admit. Compare:
