'The Question' Is No More.

Still working on how to phrase it on the form, but it boils down to the fact that my immediate family were, shall we say, unsupportive of my desire to make a career of writing. In the event that career does take off, and I have every confidence that it will, I don't want to be bothered with the drama that will likely ensue should it be necessary to instruct them to go fuck themselves.

If you establish that you intend to live and work under the name Templar, especially as a writer, you can cite that as your reason without all the unpleasantness of explaining your personal shit to a judge. That's pretty much how I did it.

So just put down that I intend to adopt my professional name as my legal name? Is it really that easy?

why do you have to explain yourself? Many actors, writers etc. change their names or use a different name for their profession

With state-to-state variations, yeah. When I changed it back in 1988, all I did was get a job using my chosen new name, which was admittedly similar to the original. Then I started a bank account which listed both names and informed them I was Doing business as the new name. After a short period of time, during which I received all my mail and bills and checks under the new name, I applied for the name change to Social security. Since I had proof I was paying taxes under that name and the SSN was identical, they couldn't argue.

With the SS card in hand, and various other supporting documentation, you can build up to a picture ID with the new name and that's pretty much all it takes. You can go the court system route if you like to make it official and permanent, but I've lived and worked and existed solely under the new name for over 20 years, never had a legal problem, and never went before a judge.

Eventually I'll probably drop my last name altogether and go with the pen name I originally selected. That'll be just as easy, I expect. Long as you can prove you aren't trying to hide from anything (like taxes), they don't give a shit what you call yourself...

Yeah, I'm kind of wondering why you have to explain anything. I mean as long as you're not trying to escape capture or prosecution what fuckin' business is it of theirs?

I hate my user name, but it's too late down the road to change it. Youshould feel the same TQ. I don't see the point.
