Still officially called the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the Olympics were postponed to 2021. NBC is airing its first ever live broadcast of an opening ceremony on Friday, July 23, from 6:55 a.m. to 11 a.m. EDT.

Ariel Torres won the first karate medal in U.S. history at the Olympics, claiming bronze in the men's kata on Friday. Ryo Kiyuna of Japan won the gold medal, beating Spain's Damian Quintero in the final as the sport makes its Olympic debut.

Molly Seidel finishes behind Kenyan pair to take marathon bronze at Summer Olympics
Peres Jepchirchir led a 1-2 Kenyan finish in the women's marathon, withstanding the heat and humidity while running through the streets of Sapporo, more than 500 miles north of Tokyo.

Valente gave the hard-luck American cycling team a reason to hold their heads high Sunday when she got up from a crash in the omnium-ending points race to secure her win, while Mitchell won a surprising sprint gold for Canada.
 
Team USA women's hoops wins seventh straight gold medal at Tokyo Olympics

The Japanese women's basketball team put together a smart and efficient game plan, ran it to such perfection that instructional videos could be made from the edits and showed off a roster in which everyone could shoot, dribble and pass. It was a brilliant display of basketball. And it was no match for Team USA. This is the state of play and has been for decades now as the Americans claimed their seventh consecutive gold medal in a 90-75 victory Sunday at the Tokyo Olympics. It was their 55th consecutive Olympic win. Two of the women who built and grew that dynasty, Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, put their hands on their fifth golds, the first international basketball players ever to achieve that feat.

U.S. edges China for most golds at Tokyo Olympics; also first in overall medals

The U.S. Olympic team finished atop the gold-medal standings at the Tokyo Olympics with 39 as the Americans edged past China on the final day of action. Team USA's 39 golds surpasses the totals it managed at five of the previous eight Summer Games and marks the 11th-most golds it has won at a Summer Olympics. The USA also topped the standings at Tokyo 2020 for the most overall medals with 113 (41 silver and 33 bronze), making this the Americans' second-most-successful Olympics since Los Angeles in 1984. (They won 121 at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.) Host Japan finished in third place with 27 gold medals, while Great Britain was fourth (22). The U.S.'s 113 total medals were 25 ahead of China, with the ROC in third at 71 and Great Britain in fourth with 65.
