Things you love about Star Trek

OH, I watched the virus episode of DS9 last night. TOPICAL. I wish the coronavirus made us all babel (but not die).

Kirk is alive in 'Amok Time' - I was trying to think about what my favourite moment in all of Star Trek is. I can't say I have a definitive answer, but I really like this moment! Spock and Kirk have just fought seemingly to Kirk's death because Spock had the Vulcan horn. Back on the ship, Spock dscovers Kirk is still alive and is very happy about it! Then he remembers he's a Vulcan! I love it: I love Kirk's smirk and Spock's sheer joy and the comedy background music. And of course McCoy is there to point out Spock really does love his Captain. Star Trek: ti's fun!

Is it just my imagination or did wags and pundits refer to Janeway's holodeck Irish village as "Farthaven"? Because I can find no instance of it anywhere on the entire Internet.

I’ve been rewatching the movies lately. Last week was The Final Frontier, followed by Generations a few days later.

Man, TFF is sooo much better than I remembered! It’s got so much heart, so many good character moments, and the plot is fine really. The addition of the Klingons is unnecessary, but Sybok is a refreshingly complex “villain”. For once it’s not someone who callously wants to kill everybody, he actually has good intentions, but is misguided in how he goes about fulfilling them.

I could have done without the crowbarred in romance between Uhura and Scotty, but things like the turbolift scene people often complain about really aren’t that bad if you take them in the spirit they were intended.

Generations on the other hand, just felt like quite a mishmash of ideas that didn’t spend enough time on any one plot point to really do it justice. While TTF has a clear message that your mistakes are an important part of you and your development, I’m not really sure what moral Generations was trying to impart. Picard and Kirk both have regrets about sticking to their duty at the expense of having families. And through a magic time portal they get to do the same thing they always do.

J.J. Abrams would never just have three characters in a row boat singing (at the very least the boat would be racing down the river chased by mouth monsters while the camera spins around.)

I remember I knew all the ship classes and registry numbers in the nineties when I used to get the STAR TREK FACT FILES.

I eventually forgot everything.
