Things you love about Star Trek

Happy birthday Avery Brooks (77)!

I'm not trying to diss Anson Mount's performance as Captain Pike here, he is a good actor and does a good job, but the way Pike barely reacted when M'Benga told him he fucking killed an Ambassador on Pike's ship in the zombie episode this season really made me miss characters like Sisko. He was a cool Captain to work under, but hec ould get rightseously angry when needed and would kick the shit out of you if you really crossed the line.

And I'm sure Garak being the best character in the history of tv (not even an exeggartion!) has already been mentioned in this thread.

Just watched "The Corbomite Maneuver" for who knows how many times.

It was more interesting and better acted than anything from STD or SNW.

It's fun watching Spock being a cold blooded asshole.

I remember Sardy pontificating about how good Generations actually was and I thought he was fucking loco at the time. But ya know what? He was right.
Yup. A lot of people had negative opinions about Generations back then. Many thought it was just a long TV episode.

I thought it was a good transition into more involved movies like First Contact.

On this note I think TOS season one is my favorite of the whole lot, more or less. They rarely missed a beat and it was good right out of the gate.

Agreed. I think one of the best aspects of season 1, at least for the first 10 episodes or so, is the chit chat between crew members which adds nothing to the plot but makes them more believable and relatable. In TCM, for example, Scotty's snarky remark "you have an annoying fascination with time pieces, Mr. Sulu." Adds nothing to the plot, but it sounds great; it's Scotty's way of saying "would you shut the fuck up about how much of that final ten minutes is left?"

All of this pretty much goes away when the series starts focusing on the Kirk/Spock/McCoy trinity.

Once upon a time, Portland Oregon was cool and weird and every summer this group would put on "Trek in the Park." Did it for a handful of years. Did "Space Seed." Oh, and "Mirror, Mirror." Last one they did was "The Trouble With Tribbles." In the winter they had a tribble making event at the...at the Jack London Bar? I wanna say the actor that played Harry Kim was at the last performance.

And that probably killed the whole thing right there.

A few years ago, he posted a pic of himself on Twitter at some restaurant, bar, or otherwise near a convention he was about to attend. It was over his shoulder and depicted two female Trekkies blissfully unaware he was right next to them... and he commented as such.

I replied they were probably ignoring him because who the fuck wants to be seen in public with some loser who was an Ensign for seven years.
