Things you love about Star Trek

I watched their first episode yesterday -- it held my attention, and surprisingly it wasn't wall-to-wall talk about Trek, but their other work as well.

Adding LeVar is always a good thing.

I'll watch this, and the new Hot Ones with Will Arnett that dropped today...

Yeah, the live one that was sort of off the cuff and disorganized? That was cool too, this new one with LeVar is structured a lot better and a ton of fun.

I've got a "Far Side" compilation book around here somewhere that I'll have to look at. I hadn't realized how sloppy Larson's lettering is.

I've been known to bust TNG's balls for subpar cold opens. TOS: "We've receive a distress call from Starbase 1234. NO ONE HAS SURVIVED THE ROMULAN DEVASTATION." TNG: "LTCDR Data is having a birthday party for his cat." But tonight I must tip my hat to TNG. I mean, not on comparison, because TOS was "The Trouble With Tribbles," which, I'll admit isn't the most riveting cold open, but it is perhaps the most iconic Trek story. Ever. That said, TNG was the Borg Hugh episode. And we shall not talk about the resolution of the episode, but the cold open... "Captain's log: We are mapping Sector 1234." "Sir, we're receiving a distress call." "Send off a landing party." "I'm receiving weak lifesigns." [moves some suspiciously cube shaped wreckage] "HOLY FUCK, A FUCKING BORG!"

Of course if it was a TOS episode, it would've been pretty short, because instead of bringing it back to the Enterprise, patching it up, and teaching it how to say "The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain" without a noticeable accent, Kirk would've fucking vaporized it on the spot. And they'd have all laughed about it on the bridge, cue end credits.

I always thought Voyager had the weakest cold opens. Feels like a few times a season you'd just have a shot of Tom Paris going "Hi Harry, see you on the Bridge!" followed by a fade to black paired some dying french horns.

Not a cold open, but the opening title sequence in general. I thought Voyager had the best title sequence of any of the shows while somehow also being the worst Trek series ever.

You can do that with the Hill Street Blues theme too. God I hated Hill Street Blues.

Senior year of high school, my friends and I would sing along in the car whenever the theme song came on the radio (it was a Top 40 hit)...

Hill Street Blues
Hill Street Blues
This is the theme fro-om Hill Street Blues
Cops and bullets and a lot of SEX
Cops are taking bribes
And taking others' wives
It's Hill Street Blues
Oh yes it is Hill Street Blues
Hill Street Blues
Hill Street Blues

A fun thing to do is mentally replace all instances of the word "heart" with "fart." Lots of songs are instantly improved by doing this.
