Let's just say the Neanderthal version never went extinct. Take Klingons. Remember Koloth from Trouble with Tribbles? Looked like a garden variety Cro Mag. Then after the first motion picture, Klingons had a more " Neanderthal" look- massive bone structure, loads of cranial decoration. Like the hood ornament. Apparently someone thought the Neanderthal version was easier to deal with, not as high maintenance.
