Where is the Random Thread of Randomness stuff that doesn't belong in other threads thread?

Talked to a guy from work who for some reason seems to be a big conspiracy theorist and trump fan, despite being English. Luckily I was eating so could just make noises, and then stear the conversation to Andor when I'd finished eating.

Can't imagine he'd be a fan of the politics of Andor.

Culinary innovation. Yeah, I'm gonna call it that. garlic-powder-and-salt seasoned angel hair pasta topped with chili.

Only 12 degrees Fahrenheit out, but not to worry. I've got... "natural gas." And plenty of it.

Another definition of 'Tradition': "The reason you enjoy electricity, and aren't drinking and bathing in the same river the upstream neighbors piss and shit in."

Okay, that may require explanation: Tradition is the foundation of progress; it's the gathered knowledge of all previous advancements. Without that foundation, further advancement is impossible, because we'd be continuously starting over at Square One.

You're confusing tradition with innovation/invention. Tradition is a collection of socially agreed-upon mores, of written/unwritten societal rules. It's about behavior, not achievement.

The polio vaccine isn't a tradition. Conventional marriage is a tradition. Courtship through a matchmaker/chaperone was a tradition in many cultures. Slavery was a tradition in the South. Traditions work for a community in the time they are formed. But they aren't meant to last forever, as societies inevitably grow and change. Of course, there are always some stubborn people who try to impede progress...

Not a bit. Those processes rely on tradition as a foundation from which to build forward. We didn't go from dark caves to the electric lightbulb in one step. Without tradition as a foundation, the Point B of innovation lacks a Point A to start from.

Besides that point, there's also this: Not all change is de facto 'change for the better.' Remember that The Dark Ages were also 'change'. National Socialism was, when it first emerged on the scene, 'change.' AIDS was, at one point, new. New and different does not = better, just by virtue of being new and different. Sometimes 'shit that we already know works just fine' is... just fine.

Sometimes, it even happens that people with little or no knowledge of history and tradition think that something is 'innovation' or 'progress', when it is in fact just the opposite of progress. EVs, for example, are not as new as people seem to think they are. Electric vehicles started out as the norm before they were replaced with internal combustion technology.

The Dark Ages were a period of decline following the resistance to change by the presiding empires. National Socialism was a reaction to societal and cultural change that threatened white Christian supremacy. I don't even know what kind of point you were trying to make about AIDS but it fell flat.

Scared cishet white guys talk in circles in order to keep things comfy for scared cishet white guys...

I think you're using 'change' in a nonstandard way. As evidenced by your use of the nonsensical neologism 'cishet' where the accurate word is, 'normal'.

It finally happened. You know you've done it. You're stuck behind someone who is driving like they're retarded so, when you finally manage to pass them, you give them the stink-eye to see if they are as retarded as they drive. Well guess what I saw as I passed someone on the right today.
