have to have a fucking Star Trek reference on it!?!?!

'Trivia: In the Star Trek fictional universe [blah blah] has a [blah blah] and somehow this relates to [blah blah]...'

Either that or a World of Warcraft reference...

nerds.

The more retarded Star Trek fans tend to claim that the original Star Trek series inspired every technological advance made since it's inception, from cell phones to new alloys and everything in between. There's even been TV specials making such claims on the Discovery channel.

Are you saying The Shats lied?! Heathen!!! You must take out your phaser and say 67 Hail Roddenberrys as punishment.

I like reading about real "references" to other movies/shows in articles....when they are real and not fanwank.

EDIT: As too the OP's icon.....

Just a little HISTORICAL note here, but you're all posting on a site that was founded, established and run by a group of "Trek nerds" that were disgruntled members or banned members of Trek BBS.

And the claim that a lot of todays technology can be traced back to Star Trek is basically true. Quite a few inventors have claimed it as inspiration. Even the US military and NASA have received funding to research such things as Bio beds that render the human body transparent, cryogenic freezing for extended space flight, warp drive, transporter technology and anti-gravity.

Two of the contracts awarded under a Republican congress were to the Air Force to study the feasibility of both warp drive and transporter technology.

We won't even get into the free spending drunken rampage the Republicans went on the first 4 years of the Bush administration. The board members here that are pro Republican hate it when things like that are pointed out. ;)

I'm too lazy to worry about varifying your claim, but I know with a little research you can find just as many...if not more wacky expenditures signed off by politicians with a (D) after their name. Or are you one of those so blinded by partisanism that you think it's all completely one sided.

No, asshat.

I hate all politicians as a rule of thumb and hold no party affiliation. Makes it easy to pass on the Kool-aid.

As for wacky expenditures, I'm sure you probably could. But, faced with the record deficits set by the Bush administration the last 8 years, well, there's no contest.

Wrong again. White American.

With the track record you've established so far, I have to ask. Are you and Dick (VKD) related?

To get back on topic, I'd guess the reason is because Trek is so pervasive in the world.
What makes it so stupid though is that all those things have been in previous sci-fi and fiction before Star Trek ever came about, and you're right it's only because there's a large fanbase for it that these wild claims get thrown about.

You can also blame it on corporate greed. People wanting to capitalize on Trek's popularity, so they made Trek tie ins and mentions.

In slightly off topic news, I saw this thing on the news yesterday and I think the day before about a guy that put santa on a crucifix and the tag line from the guy was he died for your credit card or something like that. I thought it was hilarious. They showed an image of him hanging up there. But, his neighbors weren't the ones that were offended or outraged. It was other people.

Ahhh..the old "I'm an independant" and then you attack only one side rabidly gambit.

People didn't buy it in 04, and they aren't going to buy it in 08. Claiming to be independant doesn't add any weight to your opinions.

Again, you make an uninformed assumption. I claim NO party affiliation. I tend to look at the candidates based on merit, experience and track record. And experience of the last 8 years has shown me that Washington needs an enema, the Republicans are the largest group of corrupt liars on the face of the planet, and the Democrats are quickly showing us that they're nothing more than a group of inbreed yes men. And frankly, I haven't seen anything to indicate that an independent is any better than the rest.

And that's the difference between us. I don't drink the party Kool-aid and toe the party line because I'm expected too. I'm not blinded by party rhetoric or trying to expound party virtues that clearly no longer exist within the parties themselves.

Oh, they did buy it in 04, btw. The Republicans were booted out of the senate and congress, remember? Didn't do a damn bit of good, but they got booted. And in 08, there will more than likely be a democrat back in the oval office. Again, won't do any good, because no matter who gets elected, the Bush administration has fucked this country and the American people so bad, it's going to take decades to recover. Not years. Whom ever gets elected, be it Democrat, Republican or Independent, they're pretty much fucked from the starting gate. And of course, if a Democrat gets it, we'll have years of investigations and claims of election theft by the Republicans anyway.
