2024 WNBA FINALS: NEW YORK LIBERTY VS. MINNESOTA LYNX - GAME 4
Series Tied 2 - 2

Liberty survive OT classic vs. Lynx to win first WNBA title

The franchise that won the first game in WNBA history finally has won the last game of the season. Nearly 30 years since playing for league's inaugural championship and after several near misses, the New York Liberty are WNBA champions following a 67-62 overtime victory Sunday over the Minnesota Lynx. Breanna Stewart sealed the win with two free throws with 10.1 seconds left in the extra period. Liberty forward Jonquel Jones was named Finals MVP shortly after a game in which she led New York with 17 points. The Liberty prevailed 3-2 in a series marked by huge shots and big momentum shifts in the first three games. Little separated the teams in Game 4, which the Lynx won on two free throws with 2 seconds left.

The Liberty gave the Big Apple its first professional basketball championship since 1973. That was the New York Knicks' NBA title, which came 16 years before the oldest player on the Liberty roster, guard Courtney Vandersloot, was born. A city that loves hoops and winners gets to combine both again. After five previous tries to win the title -- starting in 1997, the WNBA's inaugural year -- the Liberty now have a crown to go with their iconic torch logo. The Liberty were the No. 1 seed at a league-best 32-8, but in the playoffs had to get past Atlanta, last year's nemesis Las Vegas and then Minnesota, which had defeated New York for the Commissioner's Cup in-season title in June.

Way-Too-Early WNBA Power Rankings: Liberty and Lynx open on top
After 28 seasons, the New York Liberty have finally won a WNBA title. And they'll start ESPN's early look at next season on top, too. While the champagne corks are still popping for the Liberty, let's look at how things could stand in 2025, which will include the league's first expansion team since 2008.

_________
It will be a busy WNBA offseason. The draft lottery is Nov. 17, and the Golden State Valkyries' expansion draft is Dec. 6. Both will be televised on ESPN. Free agency is in early 2025, plus four coaching jobs are vacant: Dallas, as of Friday, is the latest, joining Atlanta, Chicago and Los Angeles.
