texas rises to highest ranking since 2022 in women's top 25
The Longhorns moved up two spots to No. 3 after four of the top seven teams lost at least one game last week. Texas hadn't been this high in the Top 25 since the school was also third on Nov. 14, 2022. Virginia Tech moved up three spots to fifth. The Hokies have won 10 consecutive games and earned at least a share of their first ACC regular-season title at 14-2.

ACC Top-25
No.5: Virginia Tech (23-4)
No.12: NC State (23-5)
No.17: Notre Dame (21-6)
No.19: Syracuse (22-5)
No.22: Louisville (22-7)

RJ Davis carries North Carolina with Smith Center-record 42

After a huge first half, RJ Davis saw no reason to back off. Davis poured in four straight 3-pointers during a riveting second-half stretch on his way to a career-high 42 points, and No. 9 North Carolina held off skidding 75-71 on Monday night. Davis, a senior guard, set a Smith Center scoring record, surpassing the 40 points by former Tar Heels All-American Tyler Hansbrough against Georgia Tech in 2006. Davis was the only player for the Tar Heels (22-6, 14-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) to score in double figures, marking just the fourth time in the past 25 seasons that UNC won a game with only one player in double figures and the first time since 2011, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. North Carolina, with three regular-season games remaining, stretched its ACC lead to 1½ games over second-place Duke.

MEN'S BRACKETOLOGY: 2024 NCAA TOURNAMENT

In NET and the most recent polls, Houston is No. 1. According to the selection committee last week, Purdue is No. 1. In the court of public opinion, UConn (still holding the trophy) is No. 1. The problem is only one of the three can be the top overall seed next month in the NCAA tournament. I could make a legitimate case for any of them, while at the same time reminding everyone this might be a distinction without a difference. Yes, being first overall allows that team to choose its geographic path to the Final Four. But the way the regions are laid out, we already know where all three contenders are going: Purdue to the Midwest (Indy/Detroit), UConn to the East (Brooklyn/Boston) and Houston to the South (Memphis/Dallas). The only real question is who will join this trio on the top line. Arizona has left the door open for Tennessee and North Carolina, but the spot is still Arizona's to lose.

WOMEN'S BRACKETOLOGY: 2024 NCAA TOURNAMENT

Several games this week will impact the NCAA selection committee's reveal of its top 16 seeds Thursday and possibly even what happens on Selection Sunday. Texas will play at Oklahoma on Wednesday in what likely will decide the Big 12 regular-season championship and have major implications for whether the Longhorns can hold down the final No. 1 seed. Stanford can clinch the final Pac-12 title with a win at Oregon State on Thursday or at Oregon on Saturday. But the Cardinal's chances of locking up a top seed in the NCAA tournament might come down to what happens in Corvallis. Virginia Tech is a team that could steal a No. 1 seed from either Texas or Stanford, but the Hokies probably must prevail at Notre Dame on Thursday to do it.

the case for ecpanding the men's ncaa tournament to 80 teams
Exactly 50 seasons ago, the late Lefty Driesell's Maryland Terrapins were one of the best teams in the country. They rose as high as No. 2 in the national rankings and played NC State for that year's Atlantic Coast Conference title in Greensboro, North Carolina. They dropped that game in an epic overtime struggle, 103-100, to the eventual national champions.

The 1975 tournament grew from 25 to 32 teams. The tourney field reached 40 teams by 1980, 52 by 1983 and the bracket of 64 -- with no limit on the number of at-large selections from a single conference becoming a fixture in 1985.

2024 ncaa tournament bracketology - men's
St. John's in or out? Depending on your choice of bracketologist, St. John's is either just in or just out of the projected NCAA field. The Red Storm control their own destiny with two very winnable regular-season games plus the Big East tournament remaining. Victories over DePaul and Georgetown this week should be enough.

Virginia Tech's Elizabeth Kitley (knee) to miss ACC tournament

Three-time ACC Player of the Year Elizabeth Kitley has been ruled out of the ACC tournament because of the knee injury she suffered in Sunday's regular-season finale, Virginia Tech coach Kenny Brooks announced Friday. No. 11 Virginia Tech advanced to the semifinals of the ACC tournament with a 55-47 win over Miami on Friday. In her fifth season at Virginia Tech, Kitley is averaging career highs of 22.8 points and 11.4 rebounds, propelling the Hokies to the ACC regular-season championship. The two-time All-American led the Hokies to their first Final Four appearance last season. Virginia Tech is projected to be a No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament and to host early-round games, but Kitley's status could impact that.
