North Carolina, Cormac Ryan silence Duke to clinch ACC title outright​


Cormac Ryan scored a season-high 31 points, including a huge 3-pointer with 1:38 left, to help No. 7 North carolina beat No. 9 Duke 84-79 on Saturday night, claiming the Atlantic Coast Conference's regular-season title outright for the first time in seven years. Ryan made 8 of 12 shots and 6 of 8 3s to help UNC turn away push after push from its fierce rival -- and Ryan made sure to let Duke's famous Cameron Crazies hear it with some excited reactions. Ryan closed the game with two clinching free throws with 4.7 seconds left for the Tar Heels (25-6, 17-3 ACC).

Harrison Ingram added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Tar Heels, who shot 50% for the game. UNC ran out to a 15-point lead with a dominant start, then stayed in control all night. Kyle Fillipowski had 23 points to lead the Blue Devils (24-7, 15-5), who had retired Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski making a rare courtside appearance for the game. Duke got as close as a point early in the second half but never completely recovered from a Ryan-led flurry out of the gate. The Tar Heels led 40-31 at halftime.

Iowa star Caitlin Clark headlines Wooden Award top 15​


The record-breaking Caitlin Clark of the Iowa Hawkeyes headlines the 15-player national ballot for the John R. Wooden Award, it was announced on ESPN's "College GameDay" on Sunday. Clark, who was recently named Big Ten Player of the Year for the third time, is featured on the list alongside four other newly tabbed conference players of the year: the Stanford Cardinal's Cameron Brink (Pac-12), UConn Huskies' Paige Bueckers(Big East), Virginia Tech Hokies' Elizabeth Kitley (ACC) and LSU Tigers' Angel Reese (SEC). The award is given annually to the most outstanding player in women's college basketball. Bueckers (2021) and Clark (2023) took home two of the past three honors.

WOMEN'S BRACKETOLOGY: 2024 NCAA TOURNAMENT​

Notre Dame looks like the best team in the ACC and has reached the championship game of the ACC tournament. With wins over Louisville and Virginia Tech in Greensboro, Notre Dame has jumped to a No. 3 seed. The Irish were just outside looking in during the NCAA tournament selection committee's two reveals of the top 16 seeds. But now they've won seven in a row since losing to NC State -- their opponent in Sunday's ACC tournament title game. Notre Dame was the biggest mover on a Saturday that saw most of the remaining favorites win and hold their spots.

MEN'S BRACKETOLOGY: 2024 NCAA TOURNAMENT​

Arizona and UCLA squared off Thursday night in Pauley Pavilion, bringing to a close the best basketball series in Pac-12 history. In a few months the Pac-12 itself will be history, victim of an evolution in college sports that values excess over common sense. We all get it -- money talks loudest -- but that doesn't mean we have to like it. But here's the thing: No one is talking about Arizona and the Pac-12 getting the last laugh. Even Bracketology is against them -- in this update, we're elevating Tennessee as the fourth No. 1 seed in place of the Wildcats. March seeding, though, at some point gives way to April winning. And it says here that Arizona and defending champion UConn will be the two highest-ceiling teams in the NCAA field. And only one of them would play what amounts to home games at the Final Four. Just sayin'...

Payne finishes his Louisville career with a record of 12-52, with just one win away from home. The Cardinals' season ended Tuesday with a 94-85 loss to NC State in the first round of the ACC tournament to wrap up an 8-24 campaign when they went 3-17 in conference play.

clemson fires amanda butler after 6 seasons, 1 ncaa appearance
Butler went 81-106 in six seasons, including 32-75 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tigers were 12-19 and 5-13 in the ACC this year. Clemson has struggled in women's basketball for more than two decades.
 

Vanderbilt's Jerry Stackhouse out after 5 seasons​


Jerry Stackhouse has been informed that he will not return for a sixth season as Vanderbilts's coach, the school announced Thursday. The former North Carolina and NBA player signed a contract extension before the 2022-23 season, and the school is now expected to pay a significant buyout. Details are not available because Vanderbilt is a private institution. The move comes after the Commodores blew a 15-point second-half lead in Wednesday's season-ending overtime loss to Arkansas in the SEC tournament, bringing a 9-23 campaign to an end. Stackhouse, an All-American at UNC and two-time All-Star during his 18-year NBA career, was hired by Vanderbilt in 2019 to replace Bryce Drew. He had previously served as an assistant coach for the Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors and was the head coach for the Raptors 905 G League team.

uconn, houston, purdue, north carolina secure no. 1 seeds
Defending national champion UConn, a day removed from winning the Big East tournament and improving to 31-3, was chosen as the men's No. 1 overall seed. For the Cougars and Boilermakers, Sunday's selections mark the second time in as many years they landed at No. 1. For North Carolina, its No. 1 seed is the fourth and final, and came after much debate amid the committee.
